The phone rang and rang on the other end, and every second it wasn’t answered was like a jolt to my heart. I gritted my teeth, the taste of fear sharp and metallic on my tongue. I paced my living room, the thud of my feet against the floor practically shaking the walls.


“Answer your fucking phone, dammit!”


As if he’d heard my raging plea, Joe’s voice crackled through the small speaker pressed tightly to my ear. “Noah? I’m leaving for work in a few minutes, man. If you need me there earlier, we talked about this; you need to tell me beforehand.” 


“Chris and Madison were kidnapped,” I blurted out, the words tumbling from me in a rush of raw emotion. The silence on the other end stretched. Joe’s wife said something—a distant feminine voice—but my scrambled mind couldn’t decipher her words.
