That’s right, he had said something about a plan right after he’d walked through my front door, but my thoughts had been like a bunch of rogue freight trains on a rampage then.
“Okay,” I said, huffing a drawn-out breath to smooth my overactive nerves. “I’m ready to listen. How do the police plan to make sure we get Chris and Madison out safely while keeping themselves hidden? Maybe it would be best if we handled this ourselves, Joe. I don’t want to take any chances here.”
Joe nodded. “I spoke to a detective, and she advised us to do nothing and come to the station to give them all the information for them to handle. Ridiculous, right? I told her about the time limit, the demand to keep the police out of it, and you being—well—you, someone who would refuse to let anyone else take care of this for him. After all that, she came up with a possible solution, but she will need to speak to you about it first.”
