I rummaged through my drawers, papers shuffling and folders flapping as I searched for the file Joe had given me. My hands moved quickly, feeling the edges of manila folders and the cool metal of paper clips.
“I’ll look at it at home,” I had told myself, but the day’s work had swept that promise away.
It took a few moments but finally, my fingers gripped the edge of the file. Relief washed over me as I pulled it out before standing to my feet. “There it is.”
Making my way toward the door, I flicked off the light, plunging the entire office into darkness. The only light was the faint glow from the hallway, guiding me out.
I’d half expected Madison to be waiting for me out in the hallway by now, but as I turned the corner toward the bathroom, a man stepped out of the women’s restroom, stopping me in my tracks. I watched him lock the door with a click that echoed within the empty space between us.
