“I’m sorry you had to go through all of that so early in your life,” I said to her, meaning each word. No child deserved to live a burdened life, but this world didn’t give a damn about whether someone deserved something or not.
She nodded but stayed quiet, looking awkward and unsure. I sat up straighter, placing my hand over her resume, and cleared my throat. “Have you reviewed the qualifications of the job listing in detail?”
“Yes, sir.” Her submissive tone stirred something carnal in my gut.
I stared at her. Perfect— Too perfect.
Hiring her would be a form of personal torture, and I became painfully aware of that fact the more I learned about her. Maybe she was desperate and reckless, as I’d suspected earlier, showing up at an intimidatingly massive corporate building without an appointment like she had. But now, I knew it was due to an unrelenting tenacity and resolve that had pushed her to see this through.
