"I heard that Mr. Harrington spent five million dollars to airlift jasmine flowers from overseas to decorate the wedding venue. With so many flowers in season during winter, why choose jasmine?"
Caelan smiled knowingly. "Because Vivienne loves jasmine the most."
He lifted his shirt, revealing a jasmine tattoo on his lower back.
I struggled to maintain my composure, but my hand holding the phone trembled uncontrollably.
The tattoo on Caelan's lower back was designed by me.
Back then, with my efforts, his legs could barely stand.
He tearfully embraced me, saying, "Goldie, you're the best girl I've ever met, as pure and clean as jasmine. When I fully recover, I'll definitely marry you."
To reciprocate his love, I had Caelan's name tattooed on my body as well.
I never thought it was all a lie.
Caelan went to great lengths to keep it from me.
But his love for Vivienne was so passionate and well-known, how could it be hidden?
Looking at the lovey-dovey couple in the phone, I blurted out.
"Liar."
Caelan, who had already reached the door, stopped in his tracks. He turned back to look at me, saying solemnly, "Goldie, I swear on our dead child that I will never lie to you."
That night, he surprisingly didn't leave.
We slept back to back, wordless through the night.
When I woke up, Caelan was already gone.
Vivienne posted a new update on social media, "Off to take wedding photos, the scenery on the way is so beautiful."
Caelan, who had never liked any of my posts, commented below.
"You're the most beautiful scenery."
I also gave it a like.
I wrapped myself in a coat and found a tattoo parlor to remove the tattoos on my body.
It hurt a lot, much more than when I got them.
For several days in a row, Caelan didn't come back.
I dug up the jasmine flowers in the yard, watching as Vivienne sent me messages.
"You homewrecker! Don't think you can replace me just because you've clung to Caelan for seven years."
"During those seven years you were by his side, he messaged me every day. Whatever I wanted, he'd have it sent to me from across the world. What can you possibly offer to compare?"
I ignored her, so she persistently updated her social media.
Caelan accompanied her to try on wedding dresses, choose wedding rings, and host bachelor parties. The absurd part was that I had personally designed the wedding dress, the rings, and even the venue.
Caelan hadn't lied to me. He had truly brought every detail from my dreams to life.
The only difference was that I wasn't the bride.
But I no longer had the heart to care about these things.
Mother Harrington had returned.
Seemingly afraid I might change my mind, she sought me out as soon as she landed.
It was just before dawn.
The string of zeros in my bank account made my head spin, but it swept away the gloom in my heart.
I read the contract carefully, and after making sure there were no issues, I unhesitatingly signed my name.
As I finished the last stroke, Caelan called.
I put him on speaker in front of Mother Harrington.
"Goldie, I just had another nightmare. It scared me awake. Before, whenever I had nightmares, you were always there with me..."
"I miss you so much. I should be wrapping up work stuff in the next couple of days. After that, can you spend more time with me?"
Caelan had been plagued by nightmares ever since he broke his leg.
Sometimes when the pain was severe, he would even bite my shoulder until it bled.Every time, I was the one by his side, giving him massages, singing to him, keeping him company through one unbearable night after another.
But now, he no longer needs my companionship.
I glanced at Mother Harrington and slowly began to speak.
"Caelan, stop pretending. I know today is your wedding with Vivienne."
"Congratulations on getting what you wanted. I hope you two grow old together, and I hope we never meet again."
I hung up the phone and, right in front of Mother Harrington, blocked Caelan's number.
I also deleted all of my personal information, showing my determination to never see Caelan again.
To my surprise, Mother Harrington looked shocked and dismayed.
"What did you say? Caelan is marrying Vivienne? This is ridiculous! Does he think I don't know what she's been up to overseas?"
Mother Harrington could no longer focus on me and urged the driver to hurry to the wedding venue.
Before she could arrive, another shocking piece of news came through.
Caelan had left his bride at the altar.
