I blocked out their mockery and prepare to leave.
But before I could stand up, a pair of large hands pressed down on my shoulders.
"Thinking of leaving? Did I give you permission?"
Cecilia smiled at me, her eyes brimming with contempt.
"Becca, I'll give you two choices today. Either take the money and divorce, or I'll beat you until you divorce."
"It's one or the other, think carefully."
After hearing Cecilia's words, I couldn't help but laugh.
"Are you sure you want me to choose?"
Cecilia, unaware she had just made a huge mistake, looked smugly pleased with herself.
"Of course. As long as you're willing to divorce your husband, I guarantee you'll live like royalty for the rest of your life."
Barely containing my anger, I spoke slowly.
"I can divorce Cort, and I don't need to take a penny, but..."
I deliberately trailed off mid-sentence.
"You have to let me make a phone call first, because I can't make the decision to divorce on my own."
When Cecilia heard my words, she immediately burst out laughing.
"Jefferson, you really think you're somebody important, huh? I'm giving you choices to save face, not to negotiate with you."I will not screw you over about who you're calling. You're getting this divorce today, period. Got it?"
I detected the threat in Cecilia's words, but I couldn't care less. In fact, I found it slightly amusing.
"Didn't I just say I agree to divorce Cort?"
"But this needs approval from higher-ups. I can't make that call on my own."
Cecilia's face darkened. She was about to lash out when Cort held her back.
"Darling, let's be the bigger person here. Don't stoop to her level."
"If she wants to make a call, let her. My heart's been with you anyway. No one can change that."
Cort thought I was just making excuses, trying to hold onto him. He looked so smug.
I was about to argue when he continued:
"Becca, don't say I didn't warn you. No matter who you get to talk me out of this, we're getting divorced today. Period."
I believed I'd never done anything to wrong Cort since we got married.
I even transferred my monthly allowance to him without keeping a penny.
He didn't have to work or do any housework all year. Just shopping and playing mahjong all day.Aside from only being able to see each other once a year, this married life still failed to satisfy him.
At this moment, any lingering feelings I had for him vanished completely.
"Cort, stop being so full of yourself. I never said I was trying to convince you to change your mind. I just find it a bit disgusting, that's all."
"As for you and Cecilia, I hope you won't have any regrets after this phone call."
"When that time really comes, no one will be able to save you two."
Considering our history as classmates, I had intended to offer some friendly advice, but some people simply don't appreciate it.
Take the beauty queen sitting next to me, Cecilia, for example.
"Jefferson, quit the act in front of me. Whoever regrets this is a little bitch."
Cecilia was about to continue, but I quickly waved my hand to stop her.
"Fine, that statement is enough."
With that, I immediately pulled out my phone and dialed my boss's number.
