"Don't worry, I'll make you forget all of this."
Noah interrupted firmly, nodding with a very serious expression. Fury's face darkened slightly.
"Don't mind what I said. Anyway, why do you keep asking me about mutants?" Fury quickly changed the subject. He didn't want the magician dwelling on these thoughts.
Still, Fury keenly noticed that the young magician before him was genuinely concerned about mutants.
This confused him. Honestly, he couldn't see any necessary connection between mutants and magicians. Perhaps the only similarity was their possession of supernatural abilities.
However, mutants were different from magicians. After a short interaction, Fury had already classified magicians as entities not to be trifled with.
As for mutants?
Their secrets weren't so secret anymore. Their abilities and genetics had already been thoroughly studied.
Fury had even heard rumors that some organizations were developing technology specifically designed to counter mutants. At this rate, mutants might be dealt with sooner rather than later.
But magicians?
They remained a complete mystery.
The most terrifying threat isn't a nuclear weapon—it's not knowing how strong your enemy is or where they are.
Fury, having served in the military and worked as a spy for many years, understood this well. The scariest thing in warfare was the asymmetry of intelligence.
These magicians had clearly remained hidden from the world, yet they seemed to know everything about it.
If a conflict ever erupted between ordinary humans and magicians, people might not even be able to locate the magicians' base of operations. Meanwhile, magicians could appear anywhere at will—and potentially cause catastrophic damage.
While Fury mulled over all this, Noah noticed the man was finally showing signs of foresight.
But at that moment, Carol furrowed her brows and asked,
"By the way, the portal just now—could it have sent me back to Hala?"
"It could have, but we don't have the magical reserves for that," Noah answered honestly, shrugging. "However, other magicians might be able to. Our teacher, for instance, can freely traverse various high-dimensional universes."
"Oh."
Carol sighed. She had hoped for a way back. Still, she hadn't expected someone to casually have that kind of power—and from the way Noah spoke, it seemed like many could.
Even so, she had no intention of seeking out this so-called teacher. The risk felt a bit too high.
She then asked a question that made both Fury and Coulson lean in:
"What would've happened if we hadn't made it through the portal in time?"
"Simple—you'd have been sliced by space. Say the portal led to the moon, and it shut down halfway through—you might end up with your left half on Earth and your right half on the moon."
Noah explained casually, then added with a smirk, "Of course, it depends on how you pass through. If you crawl…"
Carol gave him a speechless look. "That dangerous?"
"All magic is dangerous," Noah replied seriously. "So don't play around with it."
Didn't Wong once trick one of Thanos' children like that?
At Noah's warning, everyone fell silent.
Don't try it easily?
Please. Who even knows how to use magic in the first place?
That warning made sense for himself—but for the rest, it just felt redundant. And more importantly… weren't these magicians themselves casually wielding such dangerous spells?
The vehicle slowly arrived at a nearby base. The portal had placed Noah close to it, so it didn't take long.
From there, SHIELD agents Fury and Coulson took charge—particularly Fury, whose security clearance was top-tier.
After fingerprint verification, they entered the base with ease.
But upon announcing their presence, the staff inside immediately turned hostile—just like in the original storyline—they were thrown straight into the holding room.
"Looks like your SHIELD badge isn't that useful," Carol said sarcastically, spreading her hands.
"Right? I thought SHIELD was supposed to be impressive," Noah added with a shrug. "This egghead version of you is way more interesting than your future self."
"Although our clearance is high, this facility doesn't follow our usual protocols," Fury tried to explain. But halfway through, he realized… there was no point.
"Um, Mr. Magician," Coulson said awkwardly, "Can you reopen that portal and let us out?"
"Sure."
Noah nodded, then casually fired a spell at the biometric door. The door split cleanly in half.
"But there's no need for that. Also, my name's Noah."
Ignoring Fury and Coulson's stunned expressions, Noah and Wong walked out.
Carol wasn't surprised. In fact, she thought it made sense—they clearly had the power to do that.
She stepped forward and glanced at the two SHIELD agents.
"What a pair of idiots."
Fury and Coulson finally snapped out of it. Though Noah's power had been impressive all along, this was the first time they saw him use magic so crudely.
They knew just how thick that door was. Normally, even explosives would struggle to dent it.
But Noah had casually sliced it open without even a trace.
If such a spell had been used on a human…
The thought made them both shudder. They quickly shook their heads and hurried after the others.
Now their task was clear. The archive room was on the fifth basement level, so they took the elevator directly down.
Just as they entered, a cat suddenly jumped out and landed in front of them, looking up curiously.
Noah, Wong, and Carol froze. Wong tugged Noah's sleeve and pointed at the cat in disbelief.
Noah didn't see anything strange—until he noticed infinite power radiating from the feline.
And it was just a juvenile.
"Flerken? A young one?"
"Yeah. No idea where it came from, but I think we should take it back. It's a bit too dangerous to leave here, and it always seems… hungry."
Carol rolled her eyes at Noah and Wong's whispering.
If they wanted the cat, just say so. Why make excuses like "it's hungry"?
These magicians were so annoyingly roundabout—why not just take what you want?
Meanwhile, Fury—who hadn't heard the conversation—was instantly enchanted. He went from tense agent to complete cat lover in seconds.
He walked over gleefully and picked up the cat.
"Aww! Hey there, little guy! My God, look at you—aren't you the cutest? What's your name, sweetie?"
His tone became babyish and exaggerated. If Noah hadn't known better, he wouldn't believe this was the same guy who'd one day become the future Director of SHIELD.
He looked like a total cat-obsessed idiot.
Noah wanted to smack the cat just to see what would happen—but didn't dare.
"Ignorance is bliss," Noah muttered.
"I get the feeling this guy's gonna pay for messing with that thing," Wong nodded, eyeing Fury nervously.
Eventually, Carol couldn't take it anymore. She called out to Fury and shook her head.
Fury snapped back to reality. Remembering the task at hand, he gently set the cat down and followed Noah—though he still waved the cat goodbye.
Once again, Noah casually opened the archive room's reinforced door. They stepped inside.
The archive room was huge. After a while, they found Dr. Wendy Lawson's file. There wasn't much—just a blueprint of the lightspeed engine, and a document only the Kree could read.
Most important of all—Dr. Lawson was dead. She died during an unauthorized test flight, crashing a fighter and killing the pilot.
To be honest, after reviewing the data, Fury, Coulson, and Wong could make an educated guess.
They recalled what the Skrulls had said earlier. Piecing everything together, it seemed likely that Dr. Lawson was actually a Kree who had been helping the Skrulls.
Why? They didn't know yet. But it was clear that Carol was involved in all of it.
They even found a witness statement from Maria Rambeau, along with a photograph.
The photo showed Maria, Dr. Lawson—and standing beside them was Vers, the Kree warrior currently known as Carol.
At that moment, Carol felt disoriented. Scattered fragments of memory returned—but too scattered to piece together. It was frustrating.
"Alright, Fury. I think we've found what we needed," Noah said, noting Carol's dazed state. He turned to Fury.
"Contact your 'boss' and tell him to dig deeper. I don't believe over a billion dollars in losses would be covered up without any evidence. There has to be more."
"I understand. I'll handle it right away."
