After returning home, I requested an extended leave from work, then collapsed onto the couch in the living room.
Half-asleep, I heard the commotion of Melody getting up and packing her things, followed by the heavy slam of the door as she left.
In the past, I would wake up early every morning to prepare breakfast and tenderly see her off to work.
Now, I simply rolled over and continued to sleep with my face buried in the pillow.
I spent the entire next day running around looking for a new place to live.
In the evening, I returned to our neighborhood and immediately spotted Melody getting out of Mason's car.
Melody saw me too.
She rose slightly on her tiptoes, leaning in to whisper something in Mason's ear.
Mason's face was full of adoration as he reached up to gently pinch her cheek.
I felt no anger, nor did I want to confront them about anything.
Like an insignificant stranger, I walked past them with no expression on my face.
"Draven! I'm going on a business trip with Mason tonight!"
Melody's voice called out from behind me, tinged with irritation.
"Oh," I replied without looking back, continuing to walk forward.
"Why haven't you answered any of my messages all day?"Melody barged through the front door, her face contorted with arrogance as she confronted me, then tossed a large cake onto the table:
"I even went out of my way to buy you that Black Forest cake from your favorite bakery."
Messages? She had indeed sent me quite a few today.
Just her usual requests to drop everything and deliver something she'd forgotten,
And while I was at it, bring Mason his lunch too.
I'd promptly deleted our entire chat history.
As for the cake.
Black Forest was Mason's favorite.
Not mine.
Seeing my furrowed brow and involuntary step backward, Melody's face twisted with impatience:
"Draven, don't tell me you're still sulking about yesterday? Can't you man up and stop being so petty? I've explained it to you a million times already, Mason and I..."
"I get it. He's just your guy friend, your support system. You two are purely friends and coworkers."
Caught off guard by my lack of placating her as usual, she froze in her tracks.
"You'd better not come begging me, Draven!" Melody yelled, grabbing her suitcase and slamming the door yet again as she stormed out.
Beg her for what?
To not fall for someone else?
Or to honor the vows we once made to spend our lives together?I don't want to grovel to please her anymore.
