Lin Wan stared at the short message on her phone, unable to react for a long time.
"Someone who can help you."
The other person only sent this short sentence, but it made Lin Wan so happy that she almost went crazy.
Even though she didn’t know who this person was or what they wanted, she just had a feeling they weren’t bad.
She opened her phone’s keyboard and was about to ask about their identity, but she was afraid of offending them. Instead, she asked directly about their purpose, trying to calm herself.
"What do you want?"
After sending the message, she waited nervously. But even after half an hour, there was still no reply.
Did he fall asleep?
Her heart tightened, and she felt both flustered and uneasy. She wanted to ask again, but when she turned her head, she was shocked by the anger on Huo Tingxiao’s face.
"Lin Wan, are you that impatient? You're flirting with other men right in front of me. Do you think I'm dead?!"
Lin Wan immediately knew he had misunderstood. She was about to explain, but then she thought about everything involved in this matter and hesitated.
Seeing her expression, Huo Tingxiao thought she felt guilty and became even angrier.
"Lin Wan, I warned you before. If you don’t change your ways, then I..."
"What do you want to do?" Lin Wan looked at his angry face and suddenly smiled sweetly.
"Husband, you look so jealous."
Her teasing completely enraged Huo Tingxiao. He picked up the book in his hand and threw it at her. It nearly hit her face, but she dodged easily. The book hit the wall and fell to the ground.
Lin Wan shrugged.
"Oh, missed."
Huo Tingxiao wanted to strangle her, but she acted like nothing happened. She lay down on the bed with her back to him. He was so mad his chest was heaving, but she just checked her phone again before turning off the light.
Lin Wan was startled by the sudden darkness but quickly got used to it. Since there was no reply, she put her phone away and went to sleep.
The next morning, the servant brought breakfast and Chinese medicine. Lin Wan saw it was the same servant from yesterday and asked if she could go out today.
The servant seemed to know what she was thinking and whispered to her while fixing the bed.
"Miss, it's better not to go out these days. Madam wants to impress the old master, so she ordered us to keep a close watch on you."
Lin Wan’s heart sank, but she didn’t let it show. She kept thinking about how to deal with this situation.
After breakfast, she called her grandmother. Everything seemed fine, but she still had doubts. She was relieved to hear Lin Yi was still there.
But this wasn’t a long-term solution.
A while later, she called Lin Yi again.
"Lin Yi, can the older kids at the orphanage take turns taking care of my grandmother?"
Lin Yi hesitated. "Wan Wan, you know how stubborn your grandmother is. She won’t agree to that. And the kids are boarding students—they only come back on weekends."
Lin Wan realized she had been too optimistic. After thinking for a long time, she finally made up her mind.
"Lin Yi, then please find a caregiver for my grandmother. Someone reliable and trustworthy. I’ll pay for it."
Lin Yi was shocked. "How can that be? Your money doesn’t come easily. Besides, I heard from your grandmother that you’re not treated well at the Lin family. You..."
Lin Wan cut her off, her throat feeling tight.
"Lin Yi, I just want the director’s grandmother to be taken care of properly."
Hearing Lin Wan’s choked-up voice, Lin Yi stopped arguing and said she would try to find someone.
After hanging up, Lin Wan checked her phone again—there was still no reply to her message from yesterday.
Did she ask too directly and scare the other person away?
She was about to call again when she heard voices outside. Quickly, she put her phone away and lay down.
Just as she settled in, the door opened, and Mrs. Huo and Huo Jie walked in together.
The two of them never liked her. After hearing about yesterday’s incident, their expressions were even worse.
Huo Jie rushed to her bedside and questioned her loudly. "What did you do? Why is Grandfather protecting you so much?"
As a woman who entered the Huo family while pregnant with another man’s child, she should have been despised.
Huo Grandma also glared at her, as if she wanted to burn a hole through her face.
Lin Wan sat up slowly and gave a gentle smile. "Second Brother, what are you talking about? I’m just a weak woman—what could I possibly do?"
Huo Jie was disgusted by her fake innocence. At that moment, he saw Huo Tingxiao wake up and quickly ran over.
"Big Brother, are you okay? Did this horrible woman bully you?"
Huo Tingxiao looked at the people in the room and frowned. "Why are you here?"
Huo Grandma scoffed. "I heard this woman caused trouble again. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have come!"
Huo Jie quickly agreed and bombarded Huo Tingxiao with questions. He looked anxious, as if Lin Wan was some vicious monster.
Lin Wan said nothing. After they left, she was about to get out of bed when she received a phone call.
It was Lin Yi.
"Wan Wan, something bad happened! Your grandmother is missing!"
Lin Wan’s heart almost stopped. She nearly dropped her phone. "How could she be missing?! Wasn’t she fine this morning? Did you search the hospital?"
Lin Yi was also panicked. "Yes, I searched everywhere, but she’s gone! Do you think something happened to her?"
Lin Wan completely lost control. She jumped out of bed, dragging the covers with her.
Huo Tingxiao was about to stop her, but she had already rushed out the door.
The servants quickly chased after her, trying to persuade her to rest.
But Lin Wan was too worried about her grandmother’s safety to care. She begged them to let her go, but they only shook their heads.
She had no choice but to go back and beg Huo Tingxiao.
"Huo Tingxiao, please, I have to go out! My grandmother is missing—I have to find her!"
Huo Tingxiao sneered. "You’re not really looking for someone, are you? You just want to meet that other man, right?"
Lin Wan shook her head desperately and showed him her phone.
"Look! It’s a call from Aunt Lin at the orphanage! Please believe me! My grandmother just came out of the emergency room yesterday—she’s still weak! She can’t have any accidents!"
Huo Tingxiao grabbed her phone and threw it to the ground. His eyes were cold.
"Lin Wan, I won’t believe a single word you say. Give up now."
Lin Wan looked at her phone, shattered on the ground, and felt completely hopeless. But at this moment, her grandmother’s safety mattered more than anything.
She grabbed Huo Tingxiao’s arm, her tear-filled eyes pleading.
"Huo Tingxiao, please, I beg you, I..."
Suddenly, sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. Lin Wan’s eyes widened in fear.
She reached down, her hands trembling. Her face turned pale.
"My stomach... My stomach hurts so much!"
The servants outside rushed in and were shocked by what they saw.
"Blood! The young miss is bleeding!"
