It felt like a century had passed when the door to the emergency room finally opened. He rushed over and anxiously grabbed the first doctor he saw.
"How is she? Is she okay?"
The doctor, a middle-aged man, looked at him sternly.
"This is ridiculous! Your wife is over seven months pregnant and should be resting, but instead, she's injured like this. What kind of husband are you?"
Without a word of defense, Huo Tingxiao asked urgently, "Is she badly hurt? And the baby... is the baby okay?"
The doctor pushed his hand away, clearly disgusted.
"She has multiple injuries, but they've been treated. Her broken fingers have been reattached. As for the baby in her belly..."
Huo Tingxiao waited anxiously for the doctor to continue, but instead, he just waved his hand and walked away.
Stunned, Huo Tingxiao didn't know what to do. Several nurses walked over and gave him a disdainful look.
"The baby is fine, but your wife has been through a traumatic experience and may have some mental issues. We're taking her to the hospital room now. You should follow us."
Perhaps it was because Lin Wan's appearance was too gruesome at the moment, but the nurses didn't give him any sympathy. Huo Tingxiao didn't argue and just stood there, watching as Lin Wan was wheeled out.
Her face was as white as paper, and she bit her lip tightly, as if trying to endure the pain. Her fingers were still gripping the corner of the bedsheet tightly.
Huo Tingxiao couldn't bear to look at her. He couldn't imagine what kind of torture she had endured.
When they returned to the ward, the nurses put her on the bed and turned to look at Huo Tingxiao. "If you need anything, just press the button."
Huo Tingxiao nodded and was about to walk to her bedside when he saw a nurse glaring at him angrily. It seemed like she wanted to scold him, but she was eventually pulled away by others.
Huo Tingxiao limped to Lin Wan's bed and saw her hands tightly gripping the sheets, as if she wanted to tear them apart. He wanted to pry her fingers open, but she held on too tightly, and he didn't want to hurt her. He could only give up. However, her lower lip, which she had bitten so hard, was bleeding.
Huo Tingxiao didn't know how much pain she was enduring at the moment, but he couldn't bear to see her like this. He had originally wanted to use his hands to separate her teeth from her lower lip, but she was biting too hard. He had no choice but to lean down and kiss her.
His kiss was forceful and domineering, and Lin Wan, who was unconscious, was no match for him. Soon, her teeth were pried open, and her lower lip was saved from further damage.
Huo Tingxiao tasted the strong, bloody taste in her mouth, but his heart was sour and guilty. His regret was so strong that even his eyes were swelling and burning. If he had known that something like this would happen, he would have taken her away with him.
After confirming that she wouldn't hurt herself anymore, he finally let her go and buttoned up her hospital gown to the top.
Her body was thin as a sheet of paper, and if it weren't for her swollen belly, she would have seemed to not exist at all. Huo Tingxiao silently watched her, lost in thought for a moment before finally standing up. He brought a basin of warm water and wrung out a towel, carefully wiping her face and hands as she usually did for him.
The woman on the bed was quiet, so still that he might have thought she didn't exist if not for the slight rise and fall of her chest. She was so fragile that even the slightest touch made him afraid—afraid that she would feel pain, afraid that it would make her uncomfortable.
After he finished wiping her down, he called Su An and asked him to find a servant named Jin Bei to bring over some clean clothes and daily necessities for Lin Wan.
Hanging up the phone, Huo Tingxiao tightly held Lin Wan's hand, hoping that she would wake up soon.
But what he hoped for did not come to pass.
In the early hours of the morning, Lin Wan developed a high fever. Being sick while pregnant was already harder than it was for others, and Lin Wan was so weak that the doctor dared not give her medication, so Huo Tingxiao could only wipe her down to physically cool her down.
Huo Tingxiao had never done this before, but seeing Lin Wan's face turn red from the fever, he agreed to do it. For the next few hours, he changed basin after basin of water, wiping her down again and again until dawn broke and her temperature finally dropped.
Huo Tingxiao's legs had swollen from all the walking, but he endured it all, not even making a sound when the nurses came to check on Lin Wan. He sat by the bed, looking at the woman on it, feeling a mix of emotions he couldn't quite describe.
No matter how much he used to despise her, now that she had suffered such harm because of him, he had to help her get justice.
When the sky brightened, Su An arrived with Jin Bei. Jin Bei was frightened and crouched by Lin Wan's bed, covering her mouth as she cried. Huo Tingxiao was afraid she would wake Lin Wan up, so he asked Su An to take her away.
"Did you bring the things?"
Jin Bei wiped away her tears and quickly took out the bag behind her. "Yes, I brought them. These are all the things Madam usually wears. Look..."
The man pinched his forehead wearily and waved his hand at her. "You can go back now."
Jin Bei immediately looked stunned and began to plead. "No, I want to stay and take care of Madam. Young Master, please don't drive me away. I beg you, don't drive me away..."
Huo Tingxiao had not slept all night, but he was not the least bit tired. He had figured out many things over the course of the night. Looking at the girl in front of him, who was crying like pear blossoms in the rain, he asked softly, "You're Grandfather's person, right?"
Jin Bei's crying abruptly stopped, and she looked at him in surprise. "How did you know..."
Huo Tingxiao had no intention of explaining and just stood up. "Tell Grandfather that I won’t let this matter rest. Please ask him not to interfere."
Jin Bei nodded blankly and was then sent away by Su An. When Su An came back, Huo Tingxiao had already walked to the door.
Su An noticed something unusual and worriedly said, "Mr. Huo, your leg..."
The man shook his head. "It's okay. You need to take care of the task I assigned to you as soon as possible. I must give Lin Wan an explanation."
Su An's expression immediately turned serious. "Okay, Mr. Huo. I will definitely get it done!"
Huo Tingxiao gestured for him to leave, then walked to the bedside.
Lin Wan's fever had subsided, and her complexion had returned to a pale, paper-like appearance, like a porcelain doll that would shatter at the slightest touch.
He was worried. The doctor had said that she would wake up once the fever went down, but why was there no sign of her waking up at all?
