Li Wei sat beneath the cliff, arms crossed, still digesting the system's cryptic words.
Something is waiting for me?
The system could've been a little more specific. It always acted mysterious, throwing out vague nonsense like it was some kind of celestial fortune teller. Did "something" mean treasure? A hidden secret? A bloodthirsty mutant trying to rip his face off? The possibilities were endless, and Li Wei wasn't in the mood for guessing games.
With a sigh, he stretched his legs and leaned back against the rough bark of a tree.
"System," he called out mentally.
[What do you want, host?]
"Can you transfer the stuff in the truck to the base? That way, I can get there faster."
[Understood, host. But please leave some food for survival.]
"Yeah, yeah, do that."
A moment later, the truck vanished.
Just like that.
One moment, it was there, full of supplies worth a ridiculous amount of money. The next, it was gone—poof! If he hadn't personally witnessed it, he would've suspected a gang of invisible thieves had just scammed him.
Li Wei exhaled and shook his head. He was too tired to care.
All that mattered was that he was now free to focus on getting to the base. But first… a nap. Just a quick one. Traveling alone was exhausting, and he'd barely slept the night before.
Leaning back against the tree again, he closed his eyes, letting the cool night air settle over him. The leaves rustled above, crickets chirped in the distance, and for the first time in a long while, things felt… peaceful.
Then, suddenly—
[ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!]
Li Wei jerked awake so violently that he nearly headbutted the tree. His heart pounded like a war drum. "What the hell?! System, what was that for?!"
[Host, you have to save the target.]
His groggy brain struggled to process that sentence. "Target? What target?"
[The target. The one waiting for you.]
"..."
For the briefest moment, Li Wei considered yeeting the system into the sun. But before he could demand a proper explanation, the sharp whooshing of wind made his ears twitch.
His instincts screamed at him to look up.
And when he did, his stomach dropped.
Something—no, someone—was plummeting from the sky at breakneck speed.
"Oh, hell no."
His body reacted before his brain could fully catch up. He lunged forward, arms outstretched, and braced himself. A split second later, a heavy weight crashed into his embrace with enough force to make his knees buckle. His muscles strained under the impact, but somehow, he didn't fall.
The first thing he noticed was the man in his arms.
Bloodied. Unconscious. His body was limp, but despite that, his arms were locked in a death grip around something.
No—someone.
Two tiny bundles, nestled against his chest.
Li Wei froze.
The babies—because that's what they were—looked unnervingly still. Too pale. Too quiet.
His breath hitched.
"What the hell...?"
[Target secured,] the system chirped, as if this were the most normal thing in the world.
Li Wei's eye twitched.
He just knew—his life had just become a whole lot more complicated.
