As the night dragged on there was drinking and dancing.
Eventually, parents sent their children to bed and the mated couples all left in each other's arms sharing a look of true love and devotion, the same kind of love that Romeo craved for himself.
He looked at the woman standing to his right.
Since the night began, he refused to let Helena out of his sight, something that she was particularly annoyed about.
He's enjoyed teasing her through their pack link, a skill he'd been practicing with his father and beta.
"You must be glad to have her back, Alpha," one of the retired warriors said as he looked at Romeo and Helena. "So close to the Blood Moon too!"
Romeo sensed Helena go stiff next to him, he might constantly try to chase her down, but he knew how sensitive the topic of mates was to Helena.
He reached out and held Helena's hand, gently brushing his thumb against her soft skin.
"We're both still unmated," Romeo spoke with a stern tone. "We won't know who our mates are till then."
"There are many unmated wolves in the pack, Grandpa," a tall voluptuous woman with long red hair said as she walked up to the group.
"Alpha Romeo, Helena, do you know my granddaughter Sara?" the older warrior said as he wrapped an arm around Sara's shoulder.
"Oh Alpha Romeo and I know each other quite well, Grandpa," Sara said grinning.
It was no secret that most Alpha's slept around, but it was a known fact that Romeo was more selective of his partners.
"Oh," Sara's grandpa said as he glanced between Romeo and Helena.
Most of the pack had hoped that Romeo and Helena were mated, but with every Blood Moon that passed that the pair weren't declared to be mates, the faster their hopes dimmed.
"We aren't mates, Sara," Romeo said in a definitive tone.
"We've never been at the same place during the Blood Moon, Romeo," Sara responded with a smile on her lips. "And at least with me, you know that I haven't been spreading my legs for every high-ranking wolf out there."
Romeo let out a low growl.
"Watch your words, Sara, and it's Alpha Romeo to you," he warned.
"Are you so hung up on one night with Romeo that you think it's enough to declare yourself his future Luna?" Romeo's gaze snapped to Helena who stood tall as she challenged Sara's words.
Sara looked at Helena from head to toe. She might be a head taller than Helena but at the moment Helena looked like she was taller.
"Everyone knows the Alpha doesn't sleep with just anyone," Sara said, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
Around them, some of the younger drunk members of the pack began to gather.
It was rare for anyone to challenge Helena, everyone knew that aside from being the Alpha's stepdaughter she was also quite accomplished in her own right.
"It was a mistake, Helena," Romeo said, his voice tender as he tried to pull Helena close to him.
He remembered that night, he was missing Helena and it was right after the Blood Moon.
He had been out training with other Alpha Heirs when word arrived that Helena had come home. He'd rushed home only to find out that Helena had already left, she hadn't even spent the night in her old room.
"I missed you so much back then," he whispered to her. 'I didn't want her, I never wanted anyone but you,' he added through the mind link.
"Tell me, Sara, isn't it expected for Alpha Heirs to sleep around before settling down and finding their mates?" Helena asked without bothering to even look at Romeo.
What Romeo wouldn't give to get a glimpse of what was going on in that beautiful mind of hers.
"It is normal," Sara answered with a bite in her tone.
"And it's expected since Alpha Heirs need to let out all that pent-up stress and power before they become Alphas and even after, correct?" Helena asked.
If Helena was trying to make it seem like Romeo used Sara to let out pent-up stress and that sex with her meant nothing then she'd made her point.
But something made Romeo think that there was more to Helena's words.
He knew her.
He knew she wasn't so simple-minded. It was one of the things that had attracted him to her in the first place.
'Where are you going with this, love?' he asked through the mind link.
She didn't react to what he'd said, instead, she maintained eye contact with Sara.
"If you're trying to say that all I was was a quick meaningless fuck to the Alpha then I think you've made your fucking point," Sara spat as she tried to remain poised.
"Oh, that's not the point I was trying to make, but if the shoe fits," Helena laughed and Romeo instantly got hard.
It seemed that anything Helena did these days made Romeo crave her.
Sara looked like she wanted to attack Helena and despite knowing that Helena could manage on her own Romeo was ready to pull her away and protect her.
"I think you are all forgetting I'm not just Alpha Raul's stepdaughter," Helena answered with a smirk.
That's when it hit Romeo.
Helena wasn't just an Alpha's daughter.
"I'm also the only female Alpha Heir of our generation," she added. "So if Romeo is expected to need to sleep around, then I am too."
'I don't care,' Romeo said, practically pleading for a response from her.
"And she's also stood as ambassador to other packs for two packs, the Blackmoon and Stonehill Packs," Romeo added. "She's more, way more than you are."
Everyone was stunned into silence.
They'd all forgotten that Luna Alyssa was the older sister to Alpha Sebastian Stonehill who had no children.
Helena had been living in Blood Moon for so long and she'd been loyal to Alpha Raul and his family since her mother and the Alpha were mated that they'd forgotten she was so much more.
"Let's go, Helena," Romeo said as he pulled her along. "The company's become dull."
To Romeo's surprise, Helena didn't fight him. Instead, she came with him and when they were finally alone he pulled her into a storage closet and kissed her.
