Our Family

Helena took a deep breath as she got off her phone and placed it in her pocket.

"Hey, Becca," Helena said as she got on her knees to meet her sister's height.

As she stared into her little sister's bright gaze Helena couldn't help but bite back her anger and at Romeo and worry over Rebecca.

'We found her. She's safe,' Hera reminded Helena.

'She was with Romeo. She was always safe,' Helena sighed with a bitter tone.

'But you're angry,' Hera pointed out.

Wolves and their humans could sense the other's emotions, so Hera was simply pointing out the obvious.

'Of course I am. He made everyone worry,' Helena told her wolf as she tried to keep her emotions under control.

"I followed you, Helena," Rebecca said as she smiled at her sister.

Suddenly, Rebecca's smile turned into a frown. The little girl tilted her head to the side and placed a hand on Helena's cheek.

"Is something wrong, Helena?" Rebecca asked. "Are you not happy to see me?"

Helena's heart broke at Rebecca's words.

"Rebecca, when am I not happy to see you?" Helena asked with a tight-lipped smile.

"You don't seem happy right now," Rebecca said, pulling her hand away.

Helena reached out and grabbed it, pulling her sister into a hug.

"I'm never not happy to see you, Becca," Helena sighed. "I was just worried."

"Worried?" Rebecca asked as Helena continued to hold her. "Why would you be worried? I was with Romeo. Romeo will always protect me."

Helena looked up to find her Uncle and Romeo watching them.

There was something with the soft way Romeo watched them. She was mad at him, but that look made her almost forget her anger.

"Rebecca, there have been attacks—" Helena began to say.

"Helena, don't—" Jeremiah said in an attempt to stop her as he gave her a stern look.

"What attacks?" Romeo asked as he looked between Helena and Jeremiah. "Is that why you're here?"

Helena let out a sigh and shook her head.

"Rebecca, do you think I can speak with Uncle Jeremiah and Romeo for a little bit?" Helena asked her sister as she pulled away from her embrace and held her by the shoulders.

Helena was careful not to grip her sister too tightly, worried she would scare the young girl.

Rebecca looked at her tentatively but eventually nodded.

"She's made friends with my Gamma's kids. He can take her," Jeremiah told Helena as a knock came from the door.

"Alphas," Jeremiah's Gamma said as he bowed his head in submission.

"I'll find you after," Helena told her sister as she let Rebecca go.

Helena remained silent as the door shut behind Rebecca and Jeremiah's Gamma.

She slowly stood up and crossed her hands on her chest, her furious gaze flickering between her Uncle and Romeo.

Neither Romeo nor Jeremiah dared to speak. They knew Helena was mad, and they could see that they'd both messed up.

"Where should I start?" Helena asked.

No one made a move to speak up.

"I don't see how this is an issue, I always take Rebecca out for trips like these," Romeo complained.

Helena ignored his grumbling and turned to her Uncle.

"Uncle Jeremiah, how serious are the attacks?" Helena asked.

"How do I not know there have been attacks?" Romeo added.

"You," Helena looked pointedly at Romeo. "Shut it. I'll deal with you later."

To Helena's surprise, Romeo shuts his mouth and backs down.

"Uncle?" Helena asked as she raised an eyebrow.

"It's really not that serious, Helena," Jeremiah sighed. "We've been dealing with them, the cases have just been increasing."

"And you didn't bother to tell me?" Romeo asked, his voice rising.

"Your father knew, and he is still Alpha," Jeremiah said, putting his foot down on the matter.

"You and Dad should have told me," Romeo grumbled, this time his tone a little softer. "Are there any major injuries, fatalities?"

Jeremiah shook his head. "Just minor injuries and all warriors."

"Do we know why?" Helena asked.

"No," Jeremiah said, shaking his head as he walked over to his monitor and turned the screen. It showed a timeline with numbers. "We just know that the closer we get to Romeo's Rite and the Blood Moon we've been getting more and more attacks."

"Do you think it could be related?" Romeo asked Jeremiah.

"They wouldn't have attacked Stonehill if it was," Helena said as she observed the screen. "They'd go for Blackmoon. A pack is weakest when in transition, especially with an unmated Alpha."

Jeremiah nodded as he closed his eyes and let out a frustrated breath.

Romeo walked up to Helena and cupped her face in his hands.

"We won't let it happen again, Helena," he promised as he kissed her forehead. "No one will have to go through what you and your mom did, I promise."

Helena nodded, unsure if she could keep her voice stable.

It had been an attack after her Uncle took his place as Alpha that took her father and grandfather from them.

It was supposed to be a happy day that turned bloody.

"I won't let it happen," Helena mumbled.

"We will keep our pack and family safe," Romeo promised.

With his words, Helena looked him in the eyes, and her gaze hardened.

"Speaking of keeping our family safe, why the fuck did you take Rebecca out of pack territory without telling anyone?" Helena demanded.

"We missed you—" Romeo began to whine.

"What the actual fuck Romeo?" Helena hissed.

"I think this conversation should be just between the two of you. I'll go check on Rebecca," Jeremiah said as he slipped out of his own office, leaving Romeo and Helena alone.

"Our family, I like the sound of that," Romeo said with a grin. "Tell me, Helena, will you be this protective if our children pull something like this too?"
