Alex's legs felt like lead as he stumbled into his apartment. His hands were still shaking—from exhaustion, from adrenaline, from the fact that he had just fought a guy who could throw fire with his bare hands.
He shut the door and locked it behind him, his breath coming fast. He wasn't injured, but he felt drained.
He collapsed onto the couch, staring at the ceiling.
What just happened?
A day ago, he was just a regular high school kid. Now? He had powers. People were after him. And he had barely survived his first fight.
His mind kept replaying that last moment—when his punch sent Pyre flying across the alley.
That wasn't normal. His powers weren't just stopping time… they were enhancing him.
Strength. Speed. Reflexes.
He wasn't just freezing time. He was bending it to his will.
But there was one problem.
I have no idea how to control it.
The Next Day
Alex barely slept. Again.
At school, he kept his head down. He couldn't tell anyone. Not his teachers, not his classmates—definitely not his mom.
But that didn't stop the paranoia from creeping in.
What if they're watching me?
Every time someone looked at him, his heart pounded. He kept expecting another attack. Another Pyre. Another fight.
But the day passed without incident.
Maybe he was safe.
Maybe they weren't coming for him—
Yet.
After School – The Stranger
Alex took the long way home, eyes scanning every street, every alley.
That's when he saw her.
A girl—maybe his age, maybe a little older—sitting on the hood of a parked car. Short black hair, dark hoodie, ripped jeans. She was tossing a small metal disk in the air, catching it absentmindedly.
And she was watching him.
Alex froze.
The girl smirked. "Relax, time boy. I'm not here to kill you."
His stomach dropped. She knows.
His first instinct was to run. But he forced himself to stay put.
"…Who are you?"
The girl hopped off the car and walked toward him, flipping the metal disk between her fingers.
"Name's Evelyn," she said. "And if you want to survive, you'll come with me."
Alex hesitated. "Why should I trust you?"
Evelyn sighed, rolling her eyes. "Because the guys who jumped you last night? They're just the beginning. And if you don't start training, you're gonna die."
Alex clenched his fists. He didn't trust her. But deep down, he knew she was right.
"…Fine. But if this is a trap, I'll—"
Evelyn smirked. "Relax, Timelock. I think you'll like what I have to show you."
She turned and walked away.
Alex took a deep breath and followed.
