Brutus cracked his metal-plated knuckles, his glowing red eyes locked onto Alex and Evelyn.
"You two are about to have a very bad day," he growled.
Alex gulped. "Okay, so… does he mean just us, or is everyone having a bad day?"
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Less talking. More dodging."
Before Alex could respond, Brutus lunged forward, his fist swinging like a wrecking ball.
Alex's instincts kicked in.
Slow time—just for a second!
The world blurred as he stepped aside, barely dodging Brutus's punch. The shockwave from the impact cracked the pavement where Alex had been standing.
"Whoa."
Brutus turned his head. "You're fast."
"Yeah, well, I had a great coach," Alex quipped. "She's kinda scary, though."
Evelyn smirked. "Flattery won't save you."
Brutus growled and charged again—but this time, Evelyn flicked her wrist, using telekinesis to send a dumpster slamming into his side.
BAM!
Brutus stumbled but barely looked fazed.
He grabbed the dumpster with one hand and hurled it at them.
"Uh-oh."
Alex reached out—stopped time—and took a step to the left.
When time resumed, the dumpster flew harmlessly past them, crashing into a nearby car.
Evelyn sighed. "I swear, your power makes fights unfair."
Brutus roared. "Enough games!"
His exosuit hissed, vents opening as it released a burst of red energy.
Alex's stomach dropped. "That… seems bad."
The ground shook as Brutus leaped forward with inhuman speed, closing the distance before Alex could react.
Then—BOOM!
Brutus's punch connected, sending Alex flying through the air.
He crashed into a parked van, denting the metal as pain shot through his body.
"Ow. Ow. Ow," Alex muttered. "That sucked."
Evelyn dashed forward, levitating nearby debris and launching it at Brutus. Concrete chunks shattered against his armor, barely slowing him down.
Alex groaned, forcing himself up. He had to think.
Brutus was strong. Too strong. His armor made him nearly invincible. And on top of that, his suit let him move way faster than it should.
There has to be a weak point…
Then it hit him.
The vents.
The moment Brutus had released that red energy, the vents had opened to cool the suit down.
If Alex could time it right…
He pushed himself up. "Evelyn, buy me ten seconds!"
She didn't question it. With a flick of her wrist, she lifted an entire streetlight and swung it at Brutus like a baseball bat.
CRASH!
The force sent Brutus staggering, and he roared in frustration. "I'M GETTING REAL TIRED OF YOU!"
"Yeah, yeah, I get that a lot," Evelyn shot back.
Alex watched, waiting. Counting.
Five seconds. Six. Seven…
There!
Brutus's vents opened, releasing another burst of energy.
Now or never!
Alex stopped time—just for an instant—then ran forward, climbing onto Brutus's back.
He reached out and jammed a chunk of debris directly into the cooling vent.
Then time snapped back to normal.
Brutus's suit sparked violently, alarms blaring.
"WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
"Uh… science?" Alex jumped back just as the exosuit overheated, causing Brutus to stumble.
Evelyn didn't waste a second. She raised both hands—her eyes glowing—before slamming Brutus into the pavement with a telekinetic shockwave.
BOOM!
The ground cracked as Brutus collapsed, unconscious.
Alex panted. "Okay. That… was exhausting."
Evelyn smirked. "Good job, time boy. You actually used your brain."
Alex grinned. "Thanks. Also… next time? Maybe don't hit him with a streetlight before I climb on his back."
Evelyn shrugged. "No promises."
