Brutus lay unconscious in the middle of the street, his exosuit sparking from the damage. Around them, the chaos had settled. Police sirens blared in the distance, growing louder as law enforcement rushed to the scene.
Alex let out a deep breath. "Well… that was fun."
Evelyn gave him a look. "You got punched through a van."
Alex winced. "Okay, mostly fun."
Before they could celebrate, Evelyn grabbed his arm. "Time to go."
Alex frowned. "Wait, shouldn't we—"
"You want to stick around and explain to the cops how you took down a guy in illegal military-grade armor?"
"…Fair point."
The two turned and sprinted into the nearest alleyway just as the first police cars arrived.
Back at the Warehouse
They returned to their hideout, exhausted but victorious.
Evelyn tossed Alex a cold soda from the fridge. "Nice work back there, time boy. You didn't die."
Alex popped it open. "I know, right? Totally breaking records here."
She sat on the couch, watching him. "You thinking about something?"
Alex sighed, swirling the can in his hands. "Brutus knew who we were. He said we were 'on a list.'"
Evelyn's smirk faded. "…Yeah. I caught that too."
Alex looked up. "So who put us on it?"
Silence.
Evelyn leaned forward. "That's the question, isn't it?"
Meanwhile…
Across the city, in a dark office, a man sat behind a sleek metal desk, watching the footage of Brutus's defeat.
He paused the video at the exact moment Alex stopped time.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"Interesting."
He tapped his fingers on the desk.
Then, he picked up his phone and made a call.
"…Send the next one."
