The Hunter Awakens

Jax's hideout was lit only by the glow of his monitors. The hum of servers filled the room as lines of code scrolled across the screens.

Alex stared at the words:

PROJECT PARADOX

CLASSIFIED – ACCESS RESTRICTED

Evelyn crossed her arms. "Okay, that name alone tells me this is way above our pay grade."

Jax kept typing. "I can try cracking deeper, but this firewall is nuts. Whatever this thing is, it's big."

Alex rubbed his temples. "Perfect. More mysteries."

Before Jax could respond, the power cut out.

The room was plunged into darkness.

Then—BOOM!

The door exploded inward, sending metal and sparks flying.

A massive figure stepped through the smoke.

A mechanical voice echoed through the room.

"TARGET ACQUIRED."

Alex barely had time to react before the figure charged.

Enter: The Hunter

The thing was eight feet tall, covered in black armor with glowing red eyes. Its arms were built like a walking tank, and its fists were bigger than Alex's head.

"Okay—NOPE!" Alex stopped time, grabbed Evelyn and Jax, and dove behind the desk.

Time resumed.

The Hunter's fist slammed into the ground, leaving a crater where Alex had just been.

Evelyn grabbed Jax. "MOVE!"

Jax yelped. "Oh yeah, because I was just gonna stand here and get squashed?!"

The Hunter's head snapped toward Alex.

"YOU CANNOT ESCAPE."

Alex scowled. "Great. Another walking nightmare."

The Hunter lunged.

Alex barely dodged, stopping time in bursts to avoid its attacks.

Evelyn flung a crate at it with her telekinesis. The Hunter didn't even flinch.

"Yeah, that's fair," she muttered.

Jax scrambled to a control panel. "Buy me thirty seconds! I'm triggering an EMP!"

Alex groaned. "Thirty seconds? With this thing?!"

The Hunter's hand transformed into a cannon.

"TERMINATE."

Alex's eyes widened. "Oh, come on—"

The Last Second Escape

The cannon fired. A massive energy blast tore through the hideout, sending debris everywhere.

Jax slammed a button—and the room flashed white.

The EMP knocked out the Hunter's systems, and the massive machine froze mid-step.

Alex panted. "Please tell me that shut it down."

Jax winced. "Uh… more like stunned it."

Evelyn grabbed Alex's arm. "Then we're LEAVING."

The three bolted out of the hideout as the Hunter's systems rebooted.

Behind them, its red eyes flickered back on.

The mechanical voice echoed into the night.

"TARGET WILL BE FOUND."
