The Next Move

Alex leaned against the brick wall of an alley, arms crossed, deep in thought. The city lights flickered in the distance, casting long shadows.

"So," he muttered, "let's go over what we know."

Evelyn rolled her eyes. "You mean, what little we know."

Alex ignored her. "Brutus was just muscle. Specter is the real deal. And whoever's pulling the strings wants me alive."

Evelyn tapped her foot. "And let's not forget that creepy vault cube Specter stole. If it was important enough to risk getting caught, it's probably connected to all of this."

Alex exhaled. "Which means we need to find out what's inside it."

Evelyn smirked. "Good thing I know someone who likes breaking into things."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "Please don't say—"

Evelyn was already dialing a number on her phone.

A few rings later, a voice answered.

"Yo. Who's ready to break some laws?"

Meet Jax Ryder

Jax Ryder was a hacker, thief, and overall pain in the neck. He was also the only person Evelyn trusted with tech jobs too risky for Rigs.

Jax smirked as he leaned back in his chair, surrounded by glowing monitors. "So lemme get this straight—you want me to track down some stolen super-secret mystery box that an actual assassin stole?"

Alex sighed. "Pretty much."

Jax grinned. "Awesome. I'm in."

Evelyn rolled her eyes. "I swear, you have the worst survival instincts."

Jax cracked his knuckles and started typing. "Alright, let's see what we're working with. Specter's good, but nobody covers their tracks perfectly."

Lines of code filled the screens as Jax worked his magic.

After a few minutes, he whistled. "Oof. Yeah, I found something."

Alex leaned forward. "What?"

Jax turned to them, his smirk replaced by a serious expression.

"The cube? It's not just some random artifact." He pulled up a classified document on the screen.

"It's called Project Paradox. And whatever it is, the people who made it? They're just as interested in you, Timelock."

Meanwhile…

Specter stood in the shadows, watching the security feeds. The footage showed Alex and Evelyn entering Jax's hideout.

The communicator in Specter's ear crackled to life.

A voice, calm and commanding, spoke.

"They're getting too close."

Specter's eyes narrowed. "Then I'll handle it."

The voice responded, "No. Activate the Hunter."

Specter hesitated for just a moment. Then nodded.

"As you wish."
