A New Challenger

The safehouse air grew tense as the stranger stepped forward.

Alex's instincts screamed danger.

Evelyn narrowed her eyes. "Who the hell are you?"

The stranger smirked. "Name's Ryker. And I'm here for Timelock."

Alex tensed. "Let me guess—you work for the people trying to kill me?"

Ryker laughed. "Kill you? Nah, man. I was sent to test you."

Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Oh great, another one."

Jax groaned. "Why does everyone treat you like a science experiment?"

Ryker cracked his knuckles.

"I heard you can stop time. Pretty cool trick."

He tilted his head.

"Let's see how well it works against me."

Then—he moved.

Fast.

Alex barely had time to react before Ryker was in front of him, fist flying.

Alex stopped time.

Everything froze.

Except…

Ryker kept moving.

Alex's eyes widened.

"What—?!"

Ryker grinned. And swung.

Alex barely dodged, time resuming in a blur.

Evelyn's jaw dropped. "He—he moved while time was stopped?! That's—"

Jax yelped. "That's illegal!"

Ryker smirked. "Looks like I'm not the only one with powers, huh?"

Timelock vs. Ryker

Alex blinked forward, appearing behind Ryker. He swung a punch—but Ryker dodged effortlessly.

"Yeah, no," Ryker snorted. "Try harder."

He swept Alex's legs out from under him.

Alex hit the ground with a grunt.

Evelyn flung a crate at Ryker—he punched straight through it.

Jax ducked behind the desk. "I am so not built for this."

Alex pushed himself up. "Okay… so what's your deal?"

Ryker cracked his neck. "Super-speed. But not just any speed. My powers let me move even when time is frozen."

Alex's stomach dropped. "That's… a problem."

Ryker grinned. "For you? Yeah."

Then he vanished.

Alex barely had time to react before Ryker's fist slammed into his gut, sending him flying into a shelf.

"Lesson one," Ryker said, shaking his hand. "Time-stopping isn't a win button."

Alex groaned. "Noted."

A Sudden Interruption

Before Ryker could attack again—

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

A communicator in his pocket buzzed.

Ryker sighed. "Ugh. Really?"

He pulled it out and listened.

Then smirked. "Welp. Looks like I'm done here."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "What, you just leave in the middle of a fight?"

Ryker chuckled. "Not my call. Boss says I'm done."

He gave Alex a nod.

"You're not bad, Timelock. You might actually survive what's coming."

Then—he was gone.

Just like that.

Aftermath

Jax peeked from behind the desk. "Soooo… we're just pretending that didn't happen?"

Evelyn sighed. "No. We're gonna find out who that guy works for."

Alex groaned. "And why they're sending people to 'test' me."

Rigs, who had been silent this whole time, suddenly spoke up.

"…I think I found something."

They turned.

On his screen was a classified logo.

The words made Alex's blood run cold.

PROJECT PARADOX

SUBJECT STATUS: ACTIVE

Alex clenched his fists.

"Yeah," he muttered.

"We need to find out what the hell is going on."
