Rigs stared at the screen, scrolling through files buried deep in classified databases.
"Alright," he muttered, "whoever locked this down really didn't want anyone finding it."
Jax leaned in. "Yeah, which means we absolutely have to."
Alex's gaze stayed on the screen. PROJECT PARADOX.
"Give me the basics," he said.
Rigs exhaled. "Well… from what I can dig up, Project Paradox isn't just a file." He clicked through schematics. "It's a program. A series of experiments. And you, my friend?" He tapped the screen. "You're one of them."
Alex felt a chill. "What?"
Evelyn frowned. "That doesn't make sense. Alex got his powers by accident."
Jax raised an eyebrow. "Did he?"
The room went silent.
Alex's stomach twisted. "You're saying… this wasn't a freak accident?"
Rigs pulled up a list of subjects. Most names were redacted.
But one caught Alex's eye.
Subject 07 – Status: ACTIVE
And next to it…
His name.
CARTER, ALEX.
His heart pounded.
"No," he whispered. "That's impossible."
Evelyn put a hand on his shoulder. "Alex—"
He pulled away.
"I need air."
He turned and left, stepping into the cool night.
The Watcher in the Shadows
Alex paced behind the warehouse, his thoughts racing.
Had his whole life been a lie?
Before he could process it, a voice cut through the dark.
"You weren't supposed to know."
Alex spun around.
A figure stepped out of the shadows, their face obscured by a hood.
Alex tensed. "Who are you?"
The figure sighed.
"A friend. I've been watching over you, Alex."
Alex clenched his fists. "Yeah? That's not creepy at all."
The figure chuckled. "Look, I don't have much time. But you need to understand—Project Paradox isn't just an experiment. It's a war. And you're caught in the middle."
Alex narrowed his eyes. "Why should I trust you?"
The figure hesitated—then pulled back their hood.
Alex's breath caught.
It was a woman. Late 30s, sharp eyes, a faint scar on her cheek.
And she looked… familiar.
The woman's expression softened. "Because, Alex… I helped create you."
Alex staggered back.
"…What?"
