Scandals were like wildfire.
Once they started, they didn't stop until someone was burned alive.
And right now?
That someone was me.
Lancaster Industries – Crisis Room
The atmosphere was suffocating.
A dozen executives sat around the long glass table, their faces grim as the news of my supposed espionage scandaldominated every screen in the room.
The whispers were deafening.
"She was too ambitious too fast."
"Maybe she really did it. How else would she rise so quickly?"
"She always seemed… dangerous."
I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to stay still, to not react.
Vivian had played this move masterfully.
The perfect lie, woven with just enough truth to make people doubt me.
And worse?
She had evidence.
Fabricated, of course, but real enough that even my most trusted allies were hesitating.
Nathaniel sat at the head of the table, silent as he listened to the legal team discuss potential fallout. His expression was unreadable, but the tension in his shoulders was impossible to miss.
For the first time since our marriage, I didn't know what he was thinking.
And that?
Scared me more than anything.
After the Meeting – Nathaniel's Office
I barely had time to breathe before Nathaniel called me into his office.
He stood by the window, back to me, hands in his pockets. The tension in the air was thick enough to choke.
I refused to break the silence first.
Finally, he spoke. "Tell me the truth, Evelyn."
I stiffened.
That voice—low, measured, dangerous.
He was asking if I was guilty.
I stepped forward, keeping my voice steady. "You think I did this?"
Nathaniel turned, his dark eyes locking onto mine. Assessing me.
"I think," he said slowly, "that I don't know how deep you're willing to play this game."
I swallowed back the sharp sting of betrayal.
"I didn't leak anything," I said, my voice quieter but no less firm. "And you know it."
He studied me for a long moment.
Then, to my shock, he sighed and ran a hand through his hair, his frustration slipping through for just a second.
"Then prove it," he murmured. "Because right now? The world believes you did."
I clenched my fists. Prove it?
Vivian had buried me in lies.
How the hell was I supposed to fight back when the fire was already raging?
I exhaled, turning to leave. "I will."
And when I did?
Vivian was going to wish she had never come for me.
