Scandals weren't just about the accusations.
They were about the consequences.
And right now?
I was drowning in them.
Lancaster Industries – Emergency Board Meeting
I stepped into the boardroom, my heels clicking against the cold marble floor.
Every seat was filled. Every gaze sharp, waiting, judging.
Nathaniel sat at the head of the table, unreadable as always.
Vivian?
She wasn't here, of course. She didn't need to be.
Her work was already done.
One of the older board members, Richard Caldwell, cleared his throat. "Mrs. Lancaster, you must understand how concerning this situation is."
"I do," I said evenly.
He sighed, adjusting his glasses. "The allegations are severe. And while we'd like to believe in your innocence—"
I fought back a bitter laugh. Like to believe?
"You're asking me to step down," I finished for him.
An uncomfortable silence fell over the room.
Another member, Elise Monroe, leaned forward. "Temporarily," she said, as if that softened the blow. "Until this is resolved."
Resolved.
As if I wasn't being framed.
As if they weren't waiting for me to crumble.
I let my gaze sweep across the room. Some faces were guilty. Others indifferent.
But one thing was clear—they had already decided.
I took a slow breath. "Very well."
The relief in the room was instant.
As if they had just removed a problem, not betrayed the woman fighting for this company.
But I didn't protest.
Because I wasn't done yet.
Lancaster Manor – That Night
I stood on the balcony, gripping the railing as the cold night air hit my skin.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
"I warned you not to play with fire. Enjoy watching everything burn. - V"
I exhaled slowly, my chest tight.
Vivian thought she had won.
Daniel probably thought so too, wherever he was, celebrating with his mother.
Even Nathaniel…
I turned as I heard the door behind me open.
He stepped out, his silhouette strong against the dim light.
We stood in silence, the tension between us thick.
Finally, he spoke.
"They want you out permanently."
I swallowed. "Are you going to let them?"
Nathaniel studied me, his expression unreadable.
Then, after a long pause, he said, "I don't know yet."
Something inside me cracked.
I nodded once, stepping past him, my voice calm. "Then I suppose I'll just have to convince you."
And when I did?
I was going to make them all regret ever doubting me.
