"You just are my Jolene. Jolene, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have cheated, shouldn't have held back your dreams. I know I messed up. Won't you come back to me?"
Seeing that I remained unmoved, Gunner tremblingly pulled out a necklace from his pocket.
"Jolene, look. This is our child. The psychic said if I keep our baby's ashes with me, in this blessed necklace, our child will be reincarnated and come back to us."
I paused for a moment, remembering how the old Gunner used to scoff at such supernatural nonsense.
But seeing his earnest demeanor now, my heart felt like a dead, stagnant lake.
"Gunner, we can't go back. The baby can't come back, and neither can I."
"If you have any shred of remorse, please stop disrupting my life."
Gunner was about to say something more, but catching my look of disgust, he suddenly fell silent.
His gaze fixed on my and Dashiell's intertwined hands before he turned and left.
