Chapter 23: Madness!

The tension in the air was palpable as the demon assassins surrounded the jeep, their dark figures moving with a predatory grace. Keith's heart raced as he took a deep breath, focusing on the task at hand. He could feel the weight of his companions' eyes on him, their trust in him hanging in the balance.

"Groth ! Infront! I'll cover you Kariel focus on the jumping one! Lariel cover my rear!" Kieth bark order.

"My name is Garth!" He shouted as Kieth aimed his M4A1 at the assassin in front of him.

The demon assassin lunged forward, its eyes glowing with a malevolent hunger. Keith squeezed the trigger, the rifle's report echoing in the tense air. The bullet struck true, tearing through the creature's shoulder and sending it sprawling back, but it was only momentarily halted.

"Groth! Move!" Keith shouted again, his voice cutting through the chaos. Garth, still fumbling with his gear, finally snapped to attention, sprinting toward the rear of the jeep where the cover was weakest.

Kariel, a lithe figure with a fierce determination in her eyes, darted to the side, her daggers glinting in the dim light, as she transformed into her half-dragon state. She focused on the leaping assassin, its form twisting through the air like a dark shadow. With a swift motion, she hurled one of her blades, the weapon slicing through the air and embedding itself in the creature's side. It let out a shriek but continued its assault, landing gracefully on the ground.

Lariel, the group's mage, stood firm at the rear of the jeep, her hands weaving intricate patterns in the air as she summoned a barrier of shimmering energy. The dark figures of the assassins pressed closer, their snarls echoing in the night, but Lariel's focus remained unbroken as her left hand shot water cannons while Alaric engaged in a pierce sword battle with two assassins.

The water cannons erupted from Lariel's fingertips, striking the nearest demon assassin with a force that sent it crashing to the ground. The creature hissed in fury, its skin sizzling where the water made contact, but it quickly regained its footing, eyes blazing with rage.

"Keep them off me!" Lariel shouted, her voice strained as she concentrated on maintaining the barrier. The shimmering wall flickered, threatening to collapse under the relentless assault of the demons. As she said that, Kieth heard it and aimed at the demons in front of her.

"On it!" Keith replied, his voice steady despite the chaos surrounding them. He adjusted his aim, focusing on the nearest demon that was clawing at the barrier Lariel had conjured. The creature's elongated fingers scraped against the shimmering surface, leaving dark smudges that seemed to pulse with malevolence.

With a deep breath, Keith squeezed the trigger again. The rifle barked, and the bullet found its mark, striking the demon squarely in the chest. It staggered back, momentarily stunned, but the others pressed forward, undeterred by the loss of their comrade.

"Kariel! Finish that one!" Keith shouted, his eyes darting to the leaping assassin that had evaded her initial attack. It was now poised to strike, its claws glinting in the dim light as it prepared to leap at Lariel.

With a fierce growl, Kariel lunged forward, her half-dragon form giving her an edge in speed and agility. She closed the distance in an instant, her remaining dagger poised to strike. The assassin's eyes widened in surprise as she slashed downward, the blade cutting through the air with deadly precision. The dagger found its target, plunging deep into the creature's chest. It let out a gurgling scream before collapsing to the ground, lifeless.

System: Assassin defeated : 1/20

The moment of victory was short-lived as the remaining demon assassins regrouped, their eyes narrowing with renewed fury. Keith could feel the tension in the air shift, the weight of their collective gaze settling on him and his companions.

"Stay sharp!" he barked, scanning the perimeter for any signs of movement. The remaining assassins were circling, their predatory instincts kicking in as they sought to exploit any weakness in their formation.

"Hey, guys, is anyone going to be mad if we destroy this part of the forest? Kieth asks as they all snap their heads at what Kieth asks.

The question hung in the air, a momentary distraction from the chaos surrounding them. Garth, still catching his breath from his earlier sprint, shot Keith a bewildered look. "Are you serious? We're fighting for our lives here, and you're worried about the trees?"

"Nah, I'm just worried about who's going to hunt us if I destroy this place," he replied with a grin.

The tension broke for just a moment, laughter mingling with the adrenaline coursing through their veins. But the humor was short-lived as the demon assassins, undeterred by their banter, lunged forward with renewed ferocity.

"Focus, Keith!" Lariel snapped, her voice cutting through the levity like a knife. "We need to hold our ground! We know you're strong, but this is not the time to joke around!" She shouted, but Keith just clicked his tongue and spoke again.

"Man, just answer the damn question!"

Garth rolled his eyes, his breath still coming in quick bursts. "I think we can worry about the forest after we survive this! But if you really want to know, I'm sure the local wildlife will be thrilled if we turn this place into a battlefield."

"So there's none; good to know," he said with a villainous smirk on his face as he summoned his weapon again. All of you duck down quickly, or you'll be one among the dead! "Kieth shouted as he pulled the trigger of the mini gun that was now at level 3, increasing its firing rate, speed, and strength, and fired all over the place around him, creating a ring of raining bullets.

The air erupted with the deafening roar of the minigun, a cacophony of gunfire that drowned out the snarls of the demon assassins. Keith's heart raced as he unleashed a torrent of bullets, the weapon spinning like a whirlwind of death. The ground erupted around him, splintering trees and sending debris flying as the bullets tore through the dark figures of the assassins.

"Fuck, I can die like this. Mommy!!!" Grath shouted as he curled on the ground while Lariel, Kariel, and Sir Aleric duck down, avoiding the rain of bullets.

The chaos of the battlefield intensified as Keith unleashed the fury of the minigun, the air thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and the cries of the demon assassins. Each bullet found its mark, tearing through the dark figures with brutal efficiency.

As The assassins, once a menacing pack, were now reduced to scattered remnants, their forms disintegrating under the relentless barrage.

"Now hide! , you fucker! I'll eradicate each one of you silly willy! Dark cloak, dark cloak my ass! There's one assassin I knew, and that's the MC on Ninja Assassin!"

The remaining demon assassins hesitated, their confidence shaken by the sudden turn of events. Keith could see the fear in their eyes, a flicker of doubt that hadn't been there before. They were no longer the hunters; they were the hunted.

"Finish them!" Keith shouted, his voice booming over the chaos. "We can't let any of them escape!"

Kariel, still in her half-dragon form, surged forward with a fierce battle cry, her daggers glinting in the fading light. She was a whirlwind of fury, striking at the nearest assassin with a speed that left the creature no chance to react. The blade found its mark, and the demon crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

Keith's laughter echoed through the chaos, a wild sound that mingled with the gunfire and the cries of the demon assassins. The minigun's relentless roar drowned out the fear that threatened to creep into his mind, and for a moment, he felt invincible.

But even as he reveled in the destruction, he knew that the fight was far from over. As his minigun gives a familiar clicking sound, Kieth clicks his tongue again. The minigun fell silent, its spinning barrel coming to a halt as Keith felt the weight of the weapon shift in his hands.

"Damn it, I'm having fun. No ammo. Summon grenade launcher!

He cursed under his breath, the thrill of the fight still coursing through him. But he didn't have time to dwell on the loss of his favorite weapon. With a swift motion, he summoned the grenade launcher, its sleek design glinting in the dim light of the forest.

System: user is more like the demon king than the actual demon king himself!

"Shut up!" Kieth retorts.

System: Grenade launcher summon, successful!

The tension in the air shifted once more as Keith braced himself, the grenade launcher feeling like a natural extension of his arm. He could see the remaining demon assassins regrouping, their eyes filled with a mix of fury and fear. They were no longer the confident predators; now they were cornered beasts, desperate and dangerous.

"Get ready!" he shouted, his voice rising above the chaos. "I'm about to make this party a whole lot more explosive! You guys hide behind me now! Cover your ears!"

"Kariel, Garth, Lariel! Sir Alaric! Get behind me!" Keith commanded, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through him. The trio quickly complied, ducking behind the jeep as Keith took aim at the nearest cluster of assassins.

With a deep breath, he pulled the trigger. The grenade launcher roared to life, sending a projectile hurtling through the air. Time seemed to slow as he watched it arc gracefully before crashing into the ground amidst the group of demons.

The explosion was deafening, a brilliant flash of light and sound that sent shockwaves through the forest. Trees splintered, and the ground shook as the blast tore through the assassins, sending them flying in all directions. Keith could feel the heat of the explosion even from his position behind the jeep, and he couldn't help but grin at the chaos he had unleashed.

"That's how you do it!" he shouted, his voice filled with exhilaration. The system notifications chimed in his ear, each one a sweet reminder of his growing tally.

But the fight was not over yet. As the smoke cleared, Keith could see that a few of the assassins had survived the blast, their forms battered but still moving. They were enraged now, their eyes burning with a fierce determination to avenge their fallen comrades.

"Alright, guys, they're all yours. I'll cover the rear. Go!" He shouted as he summoned his M1 carbine and aimed at the head of a demon hiding at the distant tree. Hey, want to meet your maker? he said as the demon snapped his head in Keith's direction, and a loud bang was heard, and the demon fell to the tree with a whole in his head.

You have defeated an assassin: 17/20!

"Damn it, this summoner is on another level. We have to retreat and relay the news to the demon king!" The demon assassin leader said that; he sensed something behind him as the shadow of Alaric loomed behind him, sword raised.

With a swift motion, Alaric brought his sword down, the blade glinting ominously in the dim light. The demon leader barely had time to react, its eyes widening in shock as the sword sliced through the air.

"Not so fast!" Alaric growled, his voice low and menacing. The blade connected with the demon's shoulder, sending it sprawling to the ground, a look of disbelief etched on its twisted face.

You have defeated an assassin: 18/20!

You have defeated an assassin: 19/20!

"One more down!" she yelled, her voice filled with adrenaline.

Garth, finally shaking off the remnants of his earlier panic, joined the fray. He charged at another assassin, his sword raised high. With a fierce battle cry, he swung down, the blade cleaving through the demon's defenses and sending it sprawling to the ground.

"You're not getting away that easily!" he shouted, his confidence growing with each victory.

Lariel, still maintaining her barrier, focused her energy on the remaining assassins. With a flick of her wrist, she unleashed a torrent of water that surged forward, crashing into the nearest demon and sending it tumbling backward. The shimmering barrier flickered but held strong, a testament to her determination.

"Keep pushing! We're almost there!" she urged, her voice steady despite the strain of maintaining her magic.

Keith took a moment to catch his breath, scanning the battlefield. The remaining assassins were visibly shaken, their numbers dwindling. He could feel the thrill of victory coursing through him, but he knew better than to let his guard down.

"Let's finish this!" he shouted, raising his M1 carbine once more. He took aim at the last assassins, his finger hovering over the trigger. "On my mark!"

"Now!" Kariel shouted, lunging forward to engage the nearest demon.

Keith squeezed the trigger, the rifle barking in response. The bullet flew true, striking the last assassin in the chest. It staggered back, eyes wide with shock, before collapsing to the ground, bleeding and slowly closing its eyes.

The battlefield fell silent, the echoes of gunfire and chaos replaced by the heavy breathing of Keith and his companions. The last of the demon assassins lay defeated, their dark forms sprawled across the forest floor, a testament to the fierce battle they had just endured.

Keith lowered his M1 carbine, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "We did it! Twenty down, not a single one left standing!" He turned to his companions, their expressions a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration.

"That was insane!" Garth exclaimed, still catching his breath. "I thought we were done for when they surrounded us like that."

"Yeah, but you all held your ground," Lariel said, her voice steady despite the fatigue evident in her eyes. "We worked together, and that made all the difference."

Kariel, still in her half-dragon form, flexed her fingers, her daggers glinting in the fading light. "I could have taken them all on my own," she said with a playful smirk, but the pride in her voice was unmistakable.

"Sure you could," Aleric replied, rolling his eyes. "But I think we all know who really saved the day." He gestured to the remnants of the battlefield, where the trees were splintered and the ground was littered with debris. "I mean, did you see that explosion? That was epic!"

Keith chuckled, the adrenaline still coursing through him. "Yeah, I might have gone a little overboard with the grenades," he admitted, glancing at the destruction around them. "But hey, it worked, right?"

Lariel stepped forward, her expression serious. "We need to regroup and assess our situation. There could be more of them lurking nearby, and we can't afford to let our guard down."

"Agreed," Alaric said, sheathing his sword. "We should find a safer location to rest and recover. This forest is too quiet now, and I don't like it."

"No, we should keep going. We don't know if more of them will come, so it's better we rush to the dwarven kingdom now," Kieth said, walking towards his military jeep. "It's better if you go now while the sun is up."

The group exchanged glances, the weight of Keith's words settling in. The adrenaline from the battle was still fresh, but the reality of their situation loomed large. They had survived this encounter, but the threat of more demon assassins was ever-present.

"Alright, let's move," Lariel said, her voice steady as she began to gather her things. "We need to stay vigilant. If they sent a group this large after us, they might have more plans in motion."

Garth nodded, his earlier panic replaced by a newfound determination. "I'm with you. I don't want to stick around and find out if they have reinforcements."

Kariel shifted back to her human form, her eyes scanning the treeline for any signs of movement. "I can scout ahead. My senses are sharper now, and I can cover more ground quickly."

"Good idea," Alaric agreed, "Just be careful. We don't know if they have any traps set up or if they're lying in wait."

Keith climbed into the driver's seat of the jeep, the engine rumbling to life beneath him. "No, let's get into the jeep. There won't be any attacks for now, so it's safer if we go now. We can't afford to linger here. If we can reach the dwarven kingdom, we'll be safer. They have defenses that can hold off any further attacks."

As Kariel darted ahead, the rest of the group piled into the jeep, the atmosphere shifting from the chaos of battle to a tense anticipation of what lay ahead. Keith gripped the steering wheel tightly, his mind racing with thoughts of their next steps.

The jeep lurched forward, the tires crunching over the debris-strewn ground as Keith navigated through the remnants of the battlefield. The air was thick with the acrid scent of gunpowder and the faint, lingering smell of burnt wood. He could feel the weight of his companions' gazes on him, a mix of gratitude and expectation. As he takes a good look at one particular demon that is holding a locket necklace with a photo of his family, he drives and murmurs to himself, "Did I just do the right thing here?"

To be continued....
