Chapter 14: The unlikely Hero!
As Keith finished his meal, he pushed the plate away and stood up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. A mix of excitement and apprehension swirled in his chest. "Alright, lead the way," he said, his eyes scanning the group of adventurers who had gathered around him, their faces a blur of curiosity and interest.
Galahan nodded, a wide grin spreading across his rugged face. "Follow us, then. The lord's estate isn't far from here." He gestured for Keith to follow, and the group set off into the vibrant city.
As they walked, the city's energy enveloped Keith like a living thing. Merchants shouted their wares, children laughed and played in the streets, and the aroma of roasting meats and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, mingling with the smell of leather and metalworking. Keith's senses were overwhelmed, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at the bustling life around him.
The group navigated through narrow alleyways, the sound of hammering on metal and the chatter of seamstresses filling the air. They passed by market stalls, where vendors touted exotic spices, fine silks, and intricately crafted jewelry. Keith's eyes widened as he took in the sights and sounds, his mind racing with questions about this new world.
As they turned a corner, the grand estate came into view. High stone walls surrounded the property, adorned with banners that fluttered in the gentle breeze. Guards stood watch at the entrance, their armor gleaming in the sunlight. The group's arrival was met with a mixture of curiosity and scrutiny from the guards, who eyed Keith with interest before nodding to Galahan.
"Lord Arin's expecting us," Galahan said, his voice firm.
The guards stepped aside, allowing the group to pass through the gates. As they entered the estate, Keith felt a sense of trepidation wash over him. What lay ahead? Would he be welcomed, or would he find himself in greater danger?
As they walked through the estate's courtyard, Keith noticed a group of guardsmen gathered near the entrance, their eyes fixed on him with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. Galahan nodded to them, and they parted to allow the group to pass.
The interior of the estate was just as impressive as its exterior, with intricately carved wooden panels and tapestries adorning the walls. Keith's footsteps echoed off the stone floor as they made their way deeper into the estate.
They eventually arrived at a large wooden door, adorned with intricate carvings of leaves and vines. Galahan knocked twice, and a soft voice bid them enter.
The door swung open, revealing a lavishly decorated room with a large window that let in a flood of sunlight. A woman with long, curly brown hair and piercing green eyes sat on a couch, surrounded by pillows and throws. She smiled weakly as Keith entered, and Galahan bowed low.
"Lord Arin's daughter, Lady Aurelia," Galahan said, his voice low and respectful. "We've brought the stranger who defeated the chimera."
Lady Aurelia's eyes locked onto Keith, and she nodded graciously. "Thank you, Galahan. Please, come closer, stranger."
Keith approached the couch, feeling a sense of unease. What did Lady Aurelia want from him? He bowed his head slightly, trying to appear respectful.
"It's an honor to meet you, Lady Aurelia," Keith said, his voice neutral.
Lady Aurelia's smile faltered for a moment, and she gestured to a nearby chair. "Please, sit. I believe you have a story to tell."
Keith sat down, his eyes scanning the room. He noticed a servant hovering near the door, and Galahan stood guard behind Lady Aurelia. The atmosphere was tense, but Keith couldn't quite put his finger on why.
"So, tell me," Lady Aurelia said, her voice soft but commanding. "What happened on the plains?" I need to learn more about what the situation is here before I decide if I can help or not. Because the current me is just a liability.
Keith leaned back in his chair, his mind racing. How much should he reveal? He decided to stick to the truth, or at least a version of it.
"I was traveling through the plains when I encountered the chimera," Keith said, his voice calm. "It attacked me, and I defended myself."
Lady Aurelia's eyes sparkled with interest. "I see. And how did you manage to defeat it?"
Keith hesitated, unsure how much to reveal about his abilities. "Well… uh… let's just say I have my ways," he said, trying to sound mysterious.
Lady Aurelia's smile returned, and she leaned forward. "I think you're being modest, stranger. Galahan tells me you're quite... resourceful."
Keith shrugged, feeling a sense of wariness. What did Lady Aurelia want from him? Was she looking for a hero or something more?
As they spoke, Keith noticed that Lady Aurelia seemed... fragile. Her skin was pale, and her eyes seemed sunken. He wondered what was wrong with her and whether he could trust her. I think she's sick; I can't tell from what.
"Tell me, Lady Aurelia," Keith said, his voice gentle. "What do you hope to gain from our conversation?"
Lady Aurelia's eyes locked onto his, and for a moment, Keith saw a glimmer of determination there. "I believe you can help me, stranger," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I believe you can help me save our kingdom."
As Keith listened to Lady Aurelia's words, he felt a sense of intrigue. Save the kingdom? What did she mean? He leaned forward, his eyes locked onto hers. This is like the shady emperor all over again. Tsk. "
"Tell me more," Keith said, his voice gentle. "What do you mean by 'save the kingdom'?"
Lady Aurelia's eyes seemed to cloud over, and she glanced at Galahan before responding. "There's a darkness spreading across the land," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "A darkness that's been growing in power for months. We've tried to stop it, but... it's spreading faster than we can contain it."
Keith's mind was racing. Darkness? What kind of darkness? He thought back to his encounter with the chimera and the strange world he found himself in. "Is she talking to…" he murmurs.
"What kind of darkness?" Keith asked, his curiosity piqued. "Man, I hope I'm wrong, because if I'm right, I'll be damned!" He continued to murmur to himself.
Lady Aurelia's eyes seemed to bore into his soul. "A darkness that corrupts the land and its creatures. We've seen monsters unlike any we've ever known before. And the people... they're changing, becoming more aggressive, more violent."
Keith's grip on the armrest tightened. This sounded like more than just a simple problem. He thought about his own abilities, his own strengths and weaknesses. " Tsk, I'm sure about it. It's a maisma! , I know I read it from someone where when we were into the capital, to learn the culture of this world, I learn that a high ranking demon like demon kings ,demon lord is capable of exuding a maisma. That can currupt anything at it's path. And it's an Airborne so that's make it even more dangerous. They say if an ordinary human gets into contact into that maisma they will turn into a demonic beings. Even mana beast is included. And the only cure for it is having a high ranking paladin to preform a purification magic to sure that infected individual. But how the hell you'll gonna do that if in this era, all of those paladins and priest is money driven suckers!" He shouted inside his head.
"So you're thinking I can help?" Keith asked, his voice measured.
Lady Aurelia's smile returned, and she leaned forward. "We've heard rumors of a prophecy," she said. "A prophecy that speaks of four strangers who will bring light to the darkness. We believe you might be one."
Keith's eyes widened in surprise. A prophecy? Him? He wasn't sure what to make of it. Not again! Why am I always getting myself into something that I don't have any advantage in? I don't even have a holy attribute, girl! Without my AI and system, I'm just a normal dude! "Tsk, life is not daijobu."
As Lady Aurelia continued to speak, Keith's mind was racing. He thought about his own situation, his own goals, and his own motivations. Could he really help this kingdom? And what would he get in return, or can he return to his own timeline?
"I'm listening," Keith said, his voice firm. "Tell me more about this prophecy and what you need me to do." Well, I'm here now. I might gather information and clues as to how I can get back to my own time, using this opportunity.
Lady Aurelia's eyes sparkled with hope. "I'll tell you everything," she said. "But first, I need to know if you're willing to help us, sir…." She said, prompting him to introduce himself.
Keith hesitated, "Oh, I'm sorry, where are my manners, my lady? I think I left it at home. Anyways, I'm Keith Martin, ma'am," as he weighed his options. Could he trust Lady Aurelia and her people? What lay ahead?
As Keith finished introducing himself, Lady Aurelia's expression turned serious. "Thank you, Keith Martin. I appreciate your willingness to listen. The prophecy speaks of four strangers who will bring light to the darkness. We've been searching for these individuals, and we believe you might be one of them."
Keith raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think that?"
Lady Aurelia leaned forward, her eyes locked onto his. "Your encounter with the chimera, your... unique abilities. We believe you might possess the qualities we're looking for."
Keith's skepticism grew. "I don't know about any prophecy or special qualities. I just defended myself against a monster."
Galahan spoke up, his voice firm. "We've seen your skills, Keith. You're not like anyone we've met before. We believe you can help us."
Keith's mind raced. He didn't know what to make of this prophecy or his supposed role in it. But something about Lady Aurelia's determination resonated with him.
"What do you need me to do?" Keith asked, his voice measured.
Lady Aurelia's smile returned, and she leaned back in her couch. "We'll need you to join us on a quest to uncover more about the prophecy and the darkness. We'll provide you with more information and resources. Will you help us, Keith Martin?"
Keith hesitated, weighing his options. He didn't know much about this world or its dangers, but something about Lady Aurelia's words struck a chord.
"Okay, I'll help," Keith said finally. "But I need to know more about this prophecy and the darkness, and I need to know what kind of resources you're talking about."
Lady Aurelia nodded, a look of relief crossing her face. "I'll provide you with everything you need to know. Let's get started."
As Lady Aurelia began to explain the details of the prophecy and the darkness, Keith listened intently, his mind racing with questions and doubts. But something about this journey felt right, like he was meant to be here, doing this.
As Lady Aurelia began to explain the details of the prophecy and the darkness, Keith listened intently, his mind racing with questions and doubts.
"The darkness is spreading rapidly across the land," Lady Aurelia said, her voice filled with concern. "It's corrupting the land and its creatures, turning them into monstrous beings. We've tried to stop it, but it's too powerful."
Keith nodded, his eyes locked onto Lady Aurelia's. "I see. And what's the plan to defeat the demon god?"
Lady Aurelia's expression turned serious. "We'll need to gather the four heroes, each with their unique abilities. Together, we'll defeat the demon god and banish the darkness. One of the heroes is Antares, a skilled warrior. He's already agreed to help us."
Keith's eyes widened slightly. "Antares? I've heard of him. He's a formidable fighter." I think I heard his name, but I don't know where. He murmured to himself again.
Lady Aurelia nodded. "Yes. He's a valuable ally, and we need him to defeat the demon god. The other two heroes are still unknown, but we believe you might be one of them, Keith."
Keith's skepticism grew. "Me? I'm just a...whatever I am. I don't know about being a hero," he whispered.
Galahan spoke up, his voice firm. "You've already shown your bravery and skill, Keith. We believe in you."
Keith shrugged, feeling a sense of uncertainty. "Okay, I'll help, but I need to know more about the plan and the other heroes."
Lady Aurelia nodded. "I'll provide you with everything you need to know. Let's get started."
As Lady Aurelia continued to explain the plan, Keith listened intently, his mind racing with questions and doubts. But something about this journey felt right, like he was meant to be here, doing this.
"So, what's the timeline?" Keith asked, his voice measured.
Lady Aurelia's expression turned serious. "We need to act quickly. The darkness is spreading rapidly, and the demon god is growing stronger by the day. We have maybe a month, maybe less." This is another fuckup situation. Tsk, find these four heroes and find clues on how to go home while trying not to get killed for helping them to defeat the demon god. Tsk. Wish me luck! "He murmurs
Keith sighed before nodding, his mind racing with the urgency of the situation. "Okay, let's get moving then."
Lady Aurelia smiled, a look of determination on her face. "I'll gather the information and resources we need. We'll set out tomorrow morning to meet with Antares and begin our quest."
Keith nodded, feeling a sense of anticipation. He was in this now, and he would see it through. "Man, I guess I'm really stuck here."
