"Is this just a sweater? Have you really become this poor?"
I put on my coat resignedly, about to explain that this sweater was bought for me by Seraphina.
I'm usually too busy to pay attention to my appearance, so I just wear the clothes she picks out for me.
Wealthy people never show their status through clothing, but their views are so short-sighted.
But they wouldn't listen to my explanation, convinced I was a pauper who couldn't even afford a sweater.
Amidst the laughter, someone in the crowd even started a commotion, suggesting they crowdfund to donate money to me.
"Eames is in such a miserable state. We've known each other for a while, we're all friends. How about everyone donates $10? That'll be enough for him to use for life!"
"I agree. Look at how pathetic he is. When he gets the money, should he kowtow to thank us?"
They completely tore off their masks of hypocrisy, one after another taking out money and throwing it at me.
The worthless paper money hit my forehead without much impact, while others started shouting for me to kowtow in gratitude.
"Hurry up and kowtow! Kowtow now!"
I silently looked towards Callie. I never imagined her hatred for me could run so deep, that she could remain so calm seeing me in this state.
"Callie, I have a clear conscience towards you. Why are you treating me like this?" Hearing my words, Callie's face contorted into a grimace as she whispered in my ear:
"You think you've done right by me? You deserve all of this! In your past life, you had someone maim me, ruining my happiness forever.
You didn't expect this, did you? In that life, I killed you, then the police gunned me down on the spot. I've been reborn too!"
"After being reborn, you trembled in fear when you saw me. That's when I knew you had also been reincarnated!"
"I originally didn't plan to let you off the hook, but I still wanted to rekindle my relationship with my Donavan, so I let you go."
As she spoke, her eyes flashed with vicious venom:
"Donavan loves me so much more than you ever did! He single-handedly elevated me to where I am now. Are you jealous of my success? Is that why you had to suddenly come back?"
"Let me tell you, it's impossible! Don't even think about telling Donavan about our past lives. I'll never let you breathe a word of it!"
She was reborn too?
I was stunned, my mind filled with the terrifying image of her smothering me to death in our past life!
Before I could react, Donavan lost his patience and viciously kicked me to the ground:
"How dare you speak to my darling? I see you haven't changed your thieving ways. Looks like I need to teach you a lesson about knowing your place, don't I?" He grabbed my collar and raised his fist, ready to smash it into my face.
"It's not what you think..."
After a long day of work, I was no match for Donavan's strength. I could only take his punches, one after another.
The others watched with excitement in their eyes, each eager to join in.
I shouted at the top of my lungs:
"Stop! I dare anyone to lay a hand on me today!"
I thought if I could just end this now, I'd let the misunderstanding go.
Little did I know, my words fell on deaf ears, only fueling their desire.
"Look at this punk acting tough! We're gonna beat you today! Let's see who dares to save you!"
A fat guy spat in my face and brutally kicked me in the stomach.
The others couldn't wait to join in, all using the excuse of avenging Callie, but really just venting their own frustrations.
Callie watched my pathetic state, a glimmer of pity flashing in her eyes.
