Chapter 4

"He's gone?!"

Serenity suddenly lifted her head.

The butler, having finally caught his breath, said fearfully, "Sir... Sir is gone... There's only a pool of blood left in the basement..."

Serenity readjusted her collar, a hint of panic in her voice.

Just as I tried to listen more closely, her voice turned harsh again.

"You must have let him escape again because you weren't watching closely enough!"

"He's been dealing with these vicious dogs since he was a child. Wasn't he supposed to be able to communicate with canines? Did he conspire with those two Tibetan mastiffs to escape? I've underestimated him!"

"Take some men and search the ventilation duct exits! Since there's blood, he must be injured and can't have gone far. When you catch him, bring him to me immediately!"

The butler's eyes widened: "Ms. Carlisle, sir is already..."

"Who do you answer to?!" Serenity impatiently cut him off.

"Am I the one who pays your salary, or is it that man?"

"Yes... I'll take some men to search right away..."

The butler was stunned, but he bowed his head and accepted the order.

Dashiell leaned in weakly. "Sister, has something really happened to brother Garrett?"

"Impossible!!"

Serenity immediately shouted in denial.

"None of you understand Garrett. That man is full of tricks! But he underestimated me! I won't be fooled like those idiots!"

Even though I've already become a ghost, why does hearing Serenity say this still hurt my heart?

I laughed scornfully, but tears flowed down my cheeks.

Just a moment ago, I was still foolishly imagining if Serenity knew she had caused my death.

Would she feel even a hint of regret and guilt...

Dashiell was an orphan adopted by Serenity.

She sent him to a prestigious school and personally took care of his daily needs.

He was the rose she had nurtured with her own hands, yet at the height of his bloom, he chose to study abroad.

"You're my sister in name, but I've fallen in love with you. The world won't understand or bless us, so I can only choose to leave you."

Before boarding the plane, Dashiell tearfully confessed to Serenity.

To pursue him, Serenity flew domestically over 300 times in a year, until she met me at the airport one day and stopped chasing. On that day at the airport, a dog escaped from pet transport and was running loose among the crowd. The dog seemed stressed, but I used my professional pet-soothing techniques to calm it down.

Later, when she confessed her feelings to me, she said that on that day, I looked like I had grown wings, appearing too beautiful to be of this world, like a fairy.

I became the esteemed master of the Carlisle's household.

Serenity believed pets carried germs and parasites, so she asked me to quit my job and stay home to prepare for pregnancy with her.

I discovered Dashiell's history with her and asked her about it.

At that time, she told me adamantly that it was all in the past!

But I still felt uneasy, so I continued to use contraception, wanting to wait a while before considering having children.

Serenity became very angry, and we started arguing.

To make matters worse, Dashiell came back at this time, saying:

"I have little time left to live. If I could spend my remaining days by my sister's side, I would die without regrets."

Serenity became frantic.

She used all her connections to search worldwide for a suitable heart donor.

She even lied to me, saying she was going for a fertility check-up, and drew ten full vials of blood for compatibility testing.
