Chapter 28: The Price of Power
The night was silent, save for the distant echoes of the undead shuffling through the ruined streets. Lucian stood atop the rooftop of his reinforced villa, gazing at the city that once belonged to the living. Now, it was nothing more than a graveyard of the past.
His crimson eyes gleamed under the moonlight as he exhaled, his breath visible in the cold air. He had spent weeks preparing, securing weapons, gathering supplies, and strengthening his shelter. But something felt… wrong.
Despite his overwhelming advantages—his infinite storage, his system, his unparalleled strength—there was a growing void inside him. A realization that power alone wasn't enough.
Because for the first time since he had come back in time, he had lost something.
---
A Costly Mistake
Earlier that day, Lucian had ventured into the city alone, hunting for valuable resources. He was confident, untouchable even. His spatial storage ability allowed him to hoard anything useful, and his superhuman strength ensured nothing could stand in his way.
But he underestimated them.
The zombies were evolving.
Lucian had encountered a horde unlike any other—faster, smarter, coordinated. They weren't the mindless creatures he remembered. They moved like predators, setting traps, forcing him into a corner.
One of them, a Hunter-class zombie, had nearly slashed his throat. If not for his enhanced reflexes, he would have died.
But it wasn't just the close call that shook him. It was what he saw in their eyes.
Awareness. Hunger. Malice.
Something was changing.

The Burden of Leadership
Lucian clenched his fists, frustration gnawing at him. He had done everything right. He had prepared, he had grown stronger, and yet… the world was still adapting.
He wasn't the only one evolving.
The zombies were too.
And if he wasn't careful, even with all his power, he could still lose everything.
A soft knock on the door behind him pulled him from his thoughts.
"Lucian?" a familiar voice called.
Evelyn.
She had been acting strange since their first night together. Hesitant. As if she was still fighting something inside her.
Lucian turned as she stepped onto the rooftop, wrapped in one of his oversized jackets. Her golden hair shimmered under the pale moonlight, and for a moment, she looked almost… fragile.
"You're still awake?" she asked.
Lucian nodded. "Couldn't sleep."
Evelyn stepped closer, her gaze searching his. "You look… troubled."
Lucian hesitated. He never let his guard down. Never let anyone see his doubts. But Evelyn wasn't just anyone.
"I made a mistake," he admitted. "I let my guard down today. Nearly got killed."
Evelyn's eyes widened, and without thinking, she reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm. "Lucian…"
He looked down at her hand. So small. So warm. So alive.
For a brief second, he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.
Comfort.
But he didn't have time for comfort.
He pulled away. "It won't happen again."
Evelyn flinched at his coldness but didn't argue. Instead, she simply stood beside him, staring at the ruined city.
A long silence stretched between them before she finally spoke.
"You don't have to do this alone."
Lucian didn't respond. Because deep down, he knew the truth.
He already was.
