A World That Won’t Let Him Rest

Chapter 29: A World That Won't Let Him Rest

The city was dead, but Lucian's mind wouldn't stop racing.

He stood on the rooftop long after Evelyn left, staring at the broken skyline. The wind howled through the streets below, carrying the distant groans of the undead. His body ached from the battle earlier, but he didn't care.

The zombies were evolving. That much was certain.

But what bothered him more… was the System's silence.

The System's Warning

Hours ago, after barely escaping the Hunter-class zombie, Lucian had expected the System to reward him. A level-up, a skill upgrade—something.

But instead, the System had issued a warning.

[Warning: Anomaly detected. Evolution of undead is accelerating.]

[Host must adapt.]

That was all. No further explanation. No rewards.

Lucian gritted his teeth. He had relied on the System to guide him. It had given him strength, skills, and the ability to stockpile resources. But now…

Now it felt like even the System was unsure of what was coming next.

A New Threat Looms

Lucian's crimson eyes narrowed as movement flickered in the distance.

His enhanced vision zoomed in on the streets below, where a shadow darted between the wreckage. It wasn't a zombie. Too fast. Too precise.

A survivor?

Lucian crouched, watching closely. The figure slipped through the ruins with practiced ease, avoiding the undead with almost unnatural agility. He could barely make out the details—a woman with short black hair, dressed in scavenged tactical gear.

And then… she vanished.

Lucian's eyes widened. What the hell?

Even with his enhanced senses, he lost sight of her.

Someone that fast, that skilled—they weren't normal.

A bad feeling crept into his gut.

The zombies weren't the only ones evolving.

Evelyn's Fears

Lucian turned away from the city, heading back inside. He needed rest, but more than that—he needed to be ready.

As he entered the villa, he found Evelyn waiting in the dimly lit hallway. Her blue eyes were troubled, her arms crossed.

"You're pushing yourself too hard," she said.

Lucian didn't slow his pace. "I don't have a choice."

Evelyn stepped in front of him, forcing him to stop. "Lucian, I—" she hesitated. "Something is coming, isn't it?"

Lucian stared at her. She felt it too.

He exhaled. "Yes."

Evelyn's hands clenched into fists. "Then don't shut me out."

Lucian's gaze softened, just for a second. She was different. She wasn't just a girl he saved. She wasn't weak.

But she didn't understand.

"I can't afford to be weak, Evelyn."

She shook her head. "And I can't afford to lose you."

For a moment, neither spoke. Then, Lucian stepped past her.

"Get some rest," he said. "Tomorrow, we prepare."

Evelyn watched him go, biting her lip.

Because for the first time since she met Lucian…

She was afraid he wouldn't win.
