Ministry of Magic, Magical Britain [2nd November, 1980]
–Amelia Bones–
She had to fight herself to keep the smile off her face as she rounded up the bastards coming in and out of the Knockturn Alley. Officially, the alley was a cesspit of illegal potions, spells, artifacts, materials, and more but unofficially, it was a convenient place for the Ministry to push all the illegal activities into one place, and have easy access to it just in case something big truly happened.
She had known that there was a reason this place was allowed to exist and had, on some level, understood the need for such a thing because people were never going to leave crime behind, at least not humans in the foreseeable future, but in the past decade, the place had gone from a slightly inconvenient place that had several items and sales of questionable items to an outright den of the most vile shit possible on the planet.
She saw more than one preserved wizard corpse, some house elves, some muggles, and many other smaller magical creatures, both alive and dead, carted off of the massive raid that was conducted on this place the day after it was officially declared that Voldemort was dead.
She had never been really afraid of dying, not to a piece of shit like Voldemort so she was not afraid for herself when it came to saying his name but she had family, a sister, a brother-in-law, a nephew. Gone, all of them, in this stupid blood purity war.
If they were really that worried about blood purity, they would not have single handedly ended more magical bloodlines than Grindelwald himself did.
So, when the time came, when one of the Dark wizards, with an unkempt appearance and Dark Magic oozing out of his store, began acting rowdy and drunk, throwing around the words "Dark Lord", "Revenge" & "Blood Traitors", she took great pleasure in uttering the bastard's name, to show the wizard that the era of fear, the era of not knowing if their friend would be alive tomorrow or not, was over.
"Voldemort," It was as if everyone in their department that was present with her, dozens of Aurors, froze on the spot, then immediately began looking around with their wands pointed every which way.
"Cowards!" She jumped a little and everyone else flinched and one even fired a stunning spell in the direction, which Moody lazily swatted with his wand. She snorted, as if a single stunner was going to do anything to Voldemort if he actually showed up.
Alastor Moody, Auror legend, personally manhandled the wizard who was misbehaving, "Voldemort is dead, you stinking piece of shit. Now, move along!"
"You, lass, you look like you'll do great. Never fear someone who won't even tell you his real name." The man spoke loudly before shoving the wizard into the waiting hands of other wizards. She sighed and used her wand to clear the area around them, removing some traces of Dark Magic and sealing the ones she could not banish. Surprisingly, most of the Dark Magic in the tiny dingy store was of the sort that made her want to puke but she held firm and sealed off it to the best of her ability, which was not the best in the department, she knew that, but with things being what they were, the DMLE, hell, the Entire Ministry was stretched thin.
On one hand, it was a momentous occasion, so the citizens were all going pretty wild in their celebrations, hence the AUror's presence required, not just for obliviating the muggles but also to rein in the more daring wizards from doing something that might irreversibly reveal them to the world, and on the other hand, the Auror department had to deal with the sudden list of criminals they were all given, to apprehend, no questions asked.
It was a pretty tall list, with many of them actually being nobility but nobody asked any questions. The Dark Side had lost and despite, to her disgust, the Auror department being full of sympathisers, they could not openly defy the orders from the Minister of Magic, else, they might just meet Dumbledore.
And not the old, genial, Headmaster that everyone knew him to be. No, the new Dumbledore was not someone who she would want to mess up. Just yesterday, Dumbledore personally caught and fired an Auror, Rowle if she remembered correctly, from the Auror force and then went one step ahead to ban him from ever holding a law enforcement position, because the ex-Auror was caught trying to enter the restricted site that was the death place of James and Lily Potter.
She knew what must have been going on in their minds when they sent an Auror to investigate the site where their Dark Lord was last seen, and she was glad that someone stopped them. She knew that Voldemort was gone, according to Dumbledore's words and more importantly, by the fact that all of the Dark Wizard nobility were either fleeing the country, publicly proclaiming no involvement with the Dark Lord, or were just going down fighting the Aurors and by Aurors, she meant Moody.
The Man had been on a warpath. The Daily Prophet was delivering real time updates with newspapers published and sent out over a few hours, such was the density of major announcements being done every day. Already, Moody had killed two Dark Wizards when they tried to use a Unforgivable spell on him.
Normally, even if the defense warranted, Auror Moody would have been benched for a while, until an inquiry was set up and he was cleared by a committee but nope, through the special powers vested in the two heads of the government, that is the Minister of Magic and the Supreme Mugwump, they were able to get Moody back in the field within the hour, and also gave him a blanket permission to not come back, even if he did kill someone in certifiable self defense.
Many Aurors were up in arms about that specific order and yet, a single statement from DUmbledore silenced them all. In no uncertain terms, he told them that he had invoked the Emergency Powers Act and was more than capable of not just firing them from the job but also imprisoning them and with another vote from the Minister, keeping them there until the Emergency Powers Act was lifted.
Such aggression and vehemence from the normally genial HEadmaster was unexpected by everyone really, and that really threw the families that supported Voldemort in for a loop as not only did they lose their biggest backer, but they also now had to deal with someone who Voldemort feared and was also now very much more aggressive and active than he was before.
"Come on, let's go." Dawlish, one of the Aurors who joined at the same time as her, patted her on the back and followed behind the squad of Aurors who were now emptying the Alley. She looked around and smiled heartily, seeing the torn apart state of the Knockturn alley.
Most of the shops had been sealed, along with the sewers as well, because there really were some really dark potions that had been flushed down by the shop owners when they saw the Auror force coming in force.
She smirked at one particularly destroyed store. After all, they had discovered a tortured House elf, limbless and blind, in that particular store, forced to work with just its legs. The sight had been enough for everyone in their team to just turn a blind eye and let her and Dawlish let loose on the store.
She made sure to unload every single offensive spell she knew and the end result was the now tattered shop that would need to be rebuilt completely.
"Bones, come on! We have another assignment. We are needed at the Ministry for some important announcement."
"Coming!" Twirling her wand, she walked out of the alley.
Huh, an announcement? She wondered what it could be.
