Chapter 6

Jia Fuhai looked at the GPS and drove directly to a reservoir. When he parked, he saw his father-in-law's car.

After parking, he hurried to the fish pond.

From a distance, he saw his father-in-law and quickly went over to greet him.

"Dad!"

Seeing his father-in-law, Zhen Fugui, who was busy setting up fishing gear, Jia Fuhai immediately greeted him and helped with the preparation.

"Hmph!"

Zhen Fugui gave a cold glance at the troublesome Jia Fuhai but didn't say much.

Not daring to say much, Jia Fuhai silently helped until his father-in-law finished setting up and started heading toward the fish pond. He followed closely behind.

They reached a fishing spot, where there were two small stones beside it.

"Dad, how should we do this?"

Since he had never fished before, he had to ask.

"Like this, and like that."

Zhen Fugui explained the basics of fishing.

After a rough understanding, Jia Fuhai, being a complete beginner, got everything ready. The two of them sat down on small stools and began fishing.

They baited the hook, cast out the lines, and waited.

Watching his father-in-law's grim face as he stared silently at the lake, Jia Fuhai naturally didn't dare to speak.

"Xiao Hai, today, let's have a heart-to-heart talk!"

The calm lake surface suddenly broke the silence when Zhen Fugui spoke. Although he often teased Jia Fuhai, when speaking face-to-face, he always addressed him as "Xiao Hai."

"Dad, go ahead!"

Since he started calling him Dad, he never used the term "father-in-law" again. When discussing marriage, he directly addressed him as "Dad."

"Given your situation back then, I would've let you marry into our family if needed, but my daughter insisted on marrying someone who would be the head of the family, so I didn't force you."

Jia Fuhai knew his father-in-law was right, so he could only smile and say, "I know, Qi Qi is the best wife in the world. Thank you, Dad, for raising such an outstanding daughter."

"My daughter is certainly the best. You'd better not let her down, or I'll make sure you die without a corpse!" Zhen Fugui said, his grip tightening on his fishing rod as he gave a stern warning, gritting his teeth at the end.

To Zhen Fugui, it was better to praise his daughter than himself. Of course, he also cared about her future well-being.

Hearing the stern warning, Jia Fuhai, feeling guilty, could only think, "My wife is your daughter, so I haven't done anything wrong, right? Right!"

"By the way, do you know about Nana..."

Before Zhen Fugui could finish his sentence, the float on the lake surface suddenly began to move wildly, and Jia Fuhai's fishing rod shook vigorously.

Seeing the bent rod, Jia Fuhai knew he had caught a big one. But seeing his awkwardness, his father-in-law could only start giving verbal instructions.

Under his father-in-law's guidance, after a brief struggle, Jia Fuhai caught an 8-kilogram trout.

He couldn't believe it was his first time fishing and he caught such a big fish. His father-in-law hadn't even caught anything yet. He turned and asked, "Dad, is it really that easy to catch big fish here?"

"..."

"It's pretty normal here. We have fish this big."

Although Zhen Fugui had never caught such a big trout before, he couldn't admit it. His expression betrayed his jealousy.

After calming himself down, Zhen Fugui decided to continue the previous topic.

"Xiao Hai, do you know about Nana..."

Before he could finish, Jia Fuhai's fishing rod shook again, and not long after, another large fish was on the line.

As Jia Fuhai sorted out his rod and prepared to cast again, he said, "Dad, you're right. The fish here are huge. By the way, what were you saying about Nana?"

"..."

Zhen Fugui's eyes narrowed with frustration. He had never caught such large fish in this pond before, and now he was feeling a mixture of envy, jealousy, and frustration.

Seeing Jia Fuhai fishing again, he took a moment to calm down. He repeated to himself that his daughter was the most important thing, that fishing was nothing compared to his daughter's future.

Time passed, and every time Zhen Fugui regained his composure, Jia Fuhai would catch another big fish.

After catching several large fish, Zhen Fugui's face grew darker, and Jia Fuhai, recognizing the mood, wisely decided to stop.

He quietly suggested, "Dad, how about we change spots?"

Jia Fuhai packed up his gear and moved back a little.

Zhen Fugui silently moved to Jia Fuhai's spot. He wasn't trying to steal the position; it just so happened the spot was now vacant.

Relieved, Jia Fuhai sat down in Zhen Fugui's spot.

By now, Zhen Fugui had given up on talking about Nana. This was a battle of fishing skills, a war for pride between father-in-law and son-in-law.

The two fished in silence.

Suddenly, there was a huge pull on the line, and the fishing rod bent violently. The surface of the lake rippled dramatically—it was obviously a massive catch.

Zhen Fugui widened his eyes, bewildered by the situation.

Sure enough, it was Jia Fuhai who had caught another big fish.

After a long struggle, Jia Fuhai hauled in a fish estimated to weigh over 10 kilograms.

Jia Fuhai smiled and turned to his father-in-law, saying, "This pond really has big fish..."

Seeing his father-in-law's dark face, he quickly finished packing up his gear and got ready to move on.

After switching spots again, Jia Fuhai silently hoped for no more fish to bite, sensing that his father-in-law was getting really frustrated. The situation was starting to become unbearable for him.

For a moment, the lake fell into an eerie silence.

The two stared silently at the lake, one hoping no more fish would come, while the other tried to save face.

Suddenly, the float on the surface jerked again.

It was Jia Fuhai again. The fishing rod bent as before, and the lake rippled.

Jia Fuhai remained calm, in stark contrast to the chaotic surface of the lake.

"Hmph!"

Zhen Fugui couldn't hold it in any longer. With a grunt, he slammed his fishing rod onto the ground.

The rod bounced and hit a stone behind him. The force twisted the rod, causing the stone to shoot forward.

Jia Fuhai heard the grunt and stiffly turned his head just as the stone hit him square in the face.

"Ouch!"

Jia Fuhai groaned, loosening his grip, and his fishing rod was dragged into the water. He could only clutch his face in pain.

At that moment, he thought to himself: maybe fishing really does require a helmet?
