Chapter 9

I hadn't expected my colleague to say, "I wasn't going to tell you this, but Nolan called last night asking where we were. He said he wanted to surprise you and told me not to say anything. But after thinking about it, I decided I should let you know."

A surprise? More like a shock. Nolan must have realized his attempt to lure me back hadn't worked, so he was planning to come find me himself and make sure I had an "accident."

Nolan was getting impatient. This wasn't good. I couldn't risk running into him. I needed to find somewhere safe.

So I quickly handed off my work to my colleague. They thought Nolan was coming to see me and that we'd be spending a couple days together, so they happily took over my tasks.

I managed a forced smile in response.

I drove to a convenience store and bought a bottle of vodka, then headed to a more isolated area. I deliberately crashed into a guardrail, downed the entire bottle of vodka, and called the police in one fell swoop.
