Hospital

Berlin's eyes fluttered open slightly, she saw two men standing over her, their hands covering their mouths in shock. She made a light movement with her fingers.

The driver and his boss stared at her in disbelief. Just moments ago, when they first looked at her bloody hands and lifeless body, they thought she was gone.

Snapping back to their senses, his boss muttered in an incoherent tone as he took out his phone from the pocket of his jacket.

"Stay with...us...I ...I need to ...call the Ambulance."

He input a short string of numbers and dialed it.

He was literally panicking while dialing the emergency number, and he could feel chills in his spine.

The thought of driving her to the hospital crossed his mind, but was scared that he might worsen her situation.

After reporting the emergency and giving out the location, The young man returned his phone to his pocket before rushing back to her side.

Seeing that Berlin's eyes were now open, he waved his hands in her view as he called out to her with a frantic facial expression on his face.

"Hello, Ma'am! It's going to be okay. Can you hear me?" He asked in a scared and worried tone.

Berlin blinked at him, but her vision was blurry, and she was slowly losing strength. But to show that she heard his voice, even though it was faint, she moved her right fingers.

From what little she could make out from their looks, she could tell that he was a young man in his late twenties, while the other seemed older, probably in his thirties.

She never expected this to happen to her. How did it get to trying to divorce her husband to becoming an accident victim?

"Thank Goodness!" The two men sighed in relief.

"My name is Jason Vicks and this is my driver, Mr. Fred Gaffer. We have called the Ambulance, It will be here in about four minutes. Please hold on, just a little bit. Okay?" Jason said to her in a strong tone.

Even though he was scared out of his wits, he still needed to keep the woman conscious till the Ambulance arrived. He had heard that injured people who lost consciousness sometimes never woke up.

Berlin had already been lying there for several minutes, bleeding. The fact that she was still conscious at all was shocking. She must have passed out right after the accident but had somehow managed to come back.

She was currently still struggling to stay conscious to await the medics.

Jason and Fred stayed by her side keeping her company so she wouldn't fall asleep.

They heard the sound of the Ambulance, and Jason let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Ma'am, the Ambulance is here!" Jason announced as his nerves became calm.

She was almost slipping into the realm of unconsciousness, she barely reacted, when she saw him pointing in the direction of flashing lights, saying something.

In this state, Berlin couldn't hear any sounds, as her senses were slowly fading away.

She couldn't even hear the hurried footsteps of the medics as they arrived in front of her, She didn't hear their voices as they checked her condition.

As they lifted her onto the stretcher, her handbag slipped from her arm. Jason saw the bag and picked it up before chasing after them.

"Are you related to her?" One of the medics who was a male asked him as the others laid Berlin inside the Ambulance.

"No..." Jason answered shaking his head.

Seeing how concerned he was about the victim, one of the medics said to him.

"You can come with us."

With that, Jason was allowed into the Ambulance. But then, he glanced at his driver.

"Don't worry, your driver can join us later. And the police will come to the hospital to get a statement from you." The male medic said to him as one of them placed an oxygen mask on Berlin.

'It seems like she not only got her right hand injured, It seemed her injuries were worse than they looked. ' Jason thought to himself as he took a good look at Berlin while the medics got to work.

His sight moved outside the Ambulance, and he saw the police vehicles approaching the accident scene and then glanced back at Berlin, her weak form, noticing how the medics worked to stabilize her.

When they got to the hospital, Berlin was rushed to the theater immediately, while Jason sat in the corridor to wait.

He looked worried as he glanced at the closed doors of the theater. But there was nothing he could do other than sit, hope and wait patiently.

While sitting there and waiting, he forgot to call the company to inform them he might not make it because of his encounter.

He almost felt like throwing a punch at her husband for not checking up on his wife after several minutes of not hearing from her.

Something kicked in Jason's mind as he thought about Berlin's husband.

'How will I contact her husband or family?'

'He might have probably tried to reach her or?'

With all these thoughts running through his mind, he suddenly remembered he had picked up her handbag from the ground at the scene of the accident.

He glanced at the bag and didn't know if what he was about to do was right, searching someone else's property without permission, and he was not even the police.

But considering the situation, he had to see if there was a way to reach Berlin's family or husband in case he was actually looking for her at the moment.

Opening the black handbag, He found her phone but it was locked and also found an ID card, which belonged to the woman. He took it out to check for the details

when footsteps approached.

"Mr. Vicks?"

Jason looked up to see four policemen standing before him.

"I'm Officer Daniels," the lead officer said. "We need your statement about the accident."

Jason nodded, gripping the bag tightly. "Of course."

Daniels pulled out a notepad. "Tell us what happened."

Jason swallowed. "We were on our way to a meeting. Fred was driving, and she... she came out of nowhere. We tried to stop, but—" He exhaled, rubbing his face. "We hit her."

Daniels exchanged looks with his colleagues. "So, your driver was behind the wheel?"

"Yes," Jason admitted. "But we didn't run. We called for help immediately."

Daniels nodded. "That's noted. But for now, we have to take your driver into custody. He'll remain detained until we confirm the full extent of her injuries."

Jason stiffened. "He didn't mean to hit her."

"Intent doesn't change the law, Mr. Vicks," Daniels said firmly. "We'll let the investigation determine what happens next."

At that moment, Fred walked in, his face pale as the officers turned to him.

"Mr. Fred Gaffer?"

Fred hesitated before nodding.

"You're being taken into custody for the accident," Daniels informed him. "Until we determine the victim's condition, you'll remain in police custody."

Fred's hands clenched at his sides. "But she was still alive when we left her!"

"That's why we're waiting," Daniels said. "If she recovers, we'll reassess. If things get worse..." He let the sentence hang.

Fred swallowed hard. Jason ran a hand through his hair, feeling helpless.

"Officer, this belongs to the lady," Jason said as he handed over the bag to them.

"How did you get it?" The policeman asked as the other three shifted close to him, so they could also look at the contents of the bag.

"It fell out from her arm" Jason reported to the police as the officer took out her phone and her ID card in it.

Seeing the name on the ID card, the policeman looked shocked before passing the ID to his colleagues.

Having noticed the sudden change in their facial expressions, Jason looked worried as he asked, "Is something wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong. But this is great news. We can reach her family right now." The head of the policeman reported with a brightened facial expression.

"Oh! That is good news." Jason said.

Just then, Berlin was wheeled out of the theater and Jason and Fred rushed to her side and called out to her.

"Ma'am!" They looked worried as they called out to her but her eyes were shut.

"Doctor, how is she?" Officer Daniels asked after glancing at the young lady.

The doctor sighed. "She's stable for now, but she has a mild concussion and a serious arm injury. If she doesn't wake up within twenty-five hours, there's a risk of brain damage."

Jason's stomach twisted.

Fred swayed on his feet. "What happens to me now?" His voice cracked.

Daniels studied him for a moment. "You'll still be taken in, but if she wakes up, your case will change."

"The victim's identity is indeed special...We have to leave now to report to the higher-ups and get in touch with her family but officer James will be here for security reasons." The head officer said as he pointed at the younger colleague.

Jason nodded at them before they left.

After some of the officers had left, Jason glanced at his watch to check the time and sighed.

Jason was beginning to be more nervous than a thief caught stealing.

'Was he also going to go to jail?'

He never saw this coming.
