- Gilbert, did you trace the place where this broadcast was coming from? - I asked my subordinate through the small earpiece I'd picked up on the plane. After all, that's what he specialises in. He wasn't just assigned to spy on me, but to do useful things.
- The signal's too hard to trace. With my skills, it should take about twenty minutes," he said, not to my satisfaction. Yeah, I guess I thought highly of him. I'd have to figure it out on my own.
There are a couple of options, though. At least one of them. I turned around and hurried to the place where I had killed Bane. I think Batman, as someone who's fought the Joker many times before, will be able to track him down. And his sidekicks will go with him, hopefully.....
But at the very spot where Bane was killed just a short time ago, something really interesting began.Batgirl and Robin again fought with the villain, but now with a huge crocodile. Apparently, it's the Croc Killer. And it looks even worse than the pictures I found. I wonder how they could even find new problems in less than a minute.
However, another maniac, now an ogre would look good on my record. Especially now, when my squad needs the publicity the most. Also, every villain I kill is a new summon, at level 9 or even stronger, which is also very useful.
However, I'd better help the kids, even though they're doing better this time, they're unlikely to kill him, and I need him dead.
This time I decided not to just rush into the fray, but to start by just coming to the rescue.
- Wow, you're really good at attracting the bad guys. This is the second one in just a couple of minutes, and no less dangerous," I said, landing behind Robin and Batgirl, who were trying to disarm Croc.
- You again! Don't bother us, we can do this without you," Robin said, giving me an annoyed look that almost got him in the face with a clawed paw. I would have had a nice scar if I hadn't pulled him out of the way in time.
- You know, I think I could use some help after all. And besides, it's best not to be distracted during a fight," I said, shooting fire into the lizard's face, causing him to jump back and try to wipe his eyes.
I then approached it and pushed it away with an air ram, knocking it to the ground. Now Krok was no longer eager to fight, apparently having assessed our strength and realised that he was losing. He rushed towards the open sewer hatch, which was not far from him. Apparently, he arrived here through it.
I immediately blocked his escape route with the earth elemental, and quickly approached him again. My blows calmly broke his bones, which were clearly stronger than human bones. And the panic on his face, still recently filled with animal fury, could be seen very clearly.
I could well have let him live, but also, like many heroes, I have my own code. If the Joker is definitely executed upon capture, especially if I ask my superiors to do so myself. He's too dangerous to take him to Task Force X. However, this crocodile could be taken there, and he might even survive there. And in that case, all his sins will be forgiven, and he has already killed a lot of people, and eaten. Some of his victims were even children. I can't give him a chance to escape.
I take two air-enhanced blows to the face, disorienting him. And after that, I deliver a killing blow to the neck, breaking it and taking the maniac's life. Now his atrocities are over.
- You killed him again," Robin said in a resigned tone.
- That's my job. Cops often kill criminals in custody, too. Besides, he would have been on death row anyway, I just sped things up a little," I said calmly, looking at the kids, not planning on going anywhere.
- The death penalty is forbidden in Gotham," Batgirl said calmly, looking at me with a slightly scrutinising gaze.
- Yes. But I'm not a member of the Gotham Police Department, and all criminals caught by my squad fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army, and are subject to the death penalty. And yes, Miss Gordon, my superiors don't know about your identity, so you could say that it's just our little secret for now," I muttered, receiving a rather quiet sigh of relief that only I could hear. Although it was rather naive to believe me just on my words, but okay. Still, even if she believed it, Bats will be able to change her mind about it a thousand times over, and enforce wariness towards me.
- Either way, you want something from us. You left pretty quickly last time," Robin said, eyeing me warily. He had learnt a lot from his teacher and good father, that's for sure.
- I'd like to find the Joker, and I thought you might be able to help me with that. We're all superheroes, after all, and all we want to do is fight criminals," I said, looking at them with a smile. Except I somehow doubt they'll help me that easily. However, there's nothing else I can do. I could just walk away and wait for them to move towards the Joker. Except I've already returned to the same spot once, so they might as well realise they're being followed.
- You're gonna kill him, too? You think we're going to help the killer," Robin said sharply, looking me straight in the eye.
- No, the Joker just can't be killed like that. Not because it might stir up some kind of uproar among his fans and criminals, but for a much more obvious reason. If you kill the Joker, his body will release a very dangerous toxin that few people would want to be exposed to," I told them, remembering one of the Joker comics I'd read in a previous life. Not that it's true, but it's definitely worth a shot.
- Hmm, why should we believe you? Maybe you just want to use us to kill the Joker," Robin asked me.
- Robin, come on. He's not a villain, and he wouldn't lie to us, especially knowing that you're recording the whole conversation. He's an official government official," Batgirl said, seemingly determined to help me. But it was more her personal dislike of the Joker, because she wouldn't mind his death, especially when she remembered how much trouble he'd caused Bats and her father.
- Why would you tell him that? Now he knows about the tape recorder," Robin said frustrated, glaring at Batgirl resentfully.
- Ahem, you've had the recorder on your belt on since the conversation started. Plus, I noticed you turned it on," I stopped the argument, embarrassing the boy a little.
- Okay, we have to help him. Still, since he wanted to take down the Joker, he's only going to help us," Batgirl said, looking at Robin.
- You're right. The main thing is to save people. Joker is in Gotham's fourth hospital right now, Batman is already rushing there too. Help him save innocent people," Robin said, looking at me. I'm surprised they helped me, I guess they deserve to be called heroes for caring more about innocent people than they do about their true feelings.
- Thank you. And I promise I won't kill the Joker," I said, heading straight for my destination.
Jumping onto the building, I was propelled by the wind currents and moved quickly towards the hospital, on the way telling Semilia of the perpetrator's whereabouts. I think I should be able to disarm him pretty quickly. Though remembering the madness of this type, I should expect some unpleasant surprises from him.
Getting to the hospital wasn't too difficult, and the exit on the roof was already open. And not just open, but hacked, so Bats was probably already here. That could add to the problem.
And as soon as I entered the building, the nasty voice of that clown was heard in my ears again, coming from the loudspeakers.
- Batman, you're here. Well, if you are, don't rush me. After all, my mates have planted a couple of bombs in this hospital, ahahahahahahahahahaha. The kids don't really like my toys, so you better hurry up, ahahahahahahahahahaha," he said, occasionally interrupted by fits of hysterical laughter. Apparently he doesn't care much about conspiracy or anything. The most important thing to him is playing games with Batman. But that's good for me.
Bombs are very unpleasant, so I'd rather defuse them myself. After all, I have skills, though not the most unrivalled, but quite good.
I immediately activate triple acceleration as soon as I enter the hospital. I dash down the stairs in a shadow that won't even be visible on the cameras. Already on the fourth floor, which is below the roof, I met several of the clown's minions.
Ambalans, dressed in strange parodies of the joker himself, and painted like clowns, stood near some office, armed with automatic rifles.
I approached them at a speed unnoticeable to an ordinary person, and quickly pulling out a knife, I took all three of them alive, immediately going into that very office. There were no people in the room itself, but here was something else, namely a rather ordinary timed bomb attached to a pillar. It had a number on it, 6:43, which kept getting smaller. There's not much time, but I have to make it.
There wasn't enough time to defuse all the bombs in the building, so I came up with a slightly crazy but effective plan. These bombs don't have much of a blast radius, and they won't shatter like a normal fragmentation bomb.
So I decided to collect all the bombs and just throw them into the sky. It's not that easy, but with the help of air magic I can fly high enough and then throw the bombs as high as possible, while caressing them with a fireball. In this case, they will either explode or burn, but at such a great distance it will not be very dangerous.
Having decided everything for myself, I quickly dashed forwards through the building, looking for more bombs. Two more I found on this floor, and rushed onwards. There were a few places where the Joker's unconscious henchmen lay, but the bombs themselves were gone, so Batman had probably taken them. And maybe his way of dealing with the bombs was similar to mine.
I whizzed through a few more floors, eventually ending up on the ground floor. After the first time, I decided to try to knock out all the other criminals, but due to my speed under triple acceleration, three more were still killed, and a few maimed.
But here on the ground floor, I only found one bomb that hadn't been defused, and I heard the sounds of battle and children crying. It was still quite strange that there was not a single hostage on any floor of the hospital.
And so upon entering the room from which the sounds were coming, a large hall opened before my eyes, filled with people in hospital clothes, some of whom were in strange fits and laughing, some children crying, and the rest unconscious.
And in the midst of all this chaos, Joker and Batman were fighting. And they fought on equal footing, not giving the enemy a single advantage. Unfortunately for the Joker, I'm here to finish his act. Carefully placing all the bombs on the floor and slowing down, I moved towards the fighting men.
Bursting into the fight, I immediately land a few punches on Joker, breaking his right arm and pushing him aside a bit. Without letting him say anything more, I continue my attacks without trying to kill him. Batman, on the other hand, kept up with me and also tried to knock the Joker out.
He ignored a few blows to the head, only shaking his head a little, but he wasn't going to pass out, so I had to do something else. A kick to the knee that forces him to his knees. Followed by a tackle that makes it almost impossible for the crazy clown to move.
I glance at Batman, and he pulls something from his belt, binding the Joker so that he can't move.
- You were too cruel," he tells me, pointing to the open fractures that the Joker has, thanks to me.
- It was necessary. We don't have time to talk now, we have to get rid of the bombs. You couldn't disarm them completely either, could you? I know a way to get rid of them, so hurry up and give them to me," I told him, grabbing my bombs, the timer on which showed only a minute and a half left.
- What do you want to do? - He asked, pressing me with his serious gaze.
- With my powers, I can fly really high and just incinerate the bombs. So even if they explode, it will happen very high up and won't hurt anyone," I told him, urging him to take action. He must realise that now is not the time to talk, for we have the lives of all these people in our hands.
- I trust you, Edmont Kent, and you better not let me down," he said in a pathetic tone as he handed some bombs into my hands.
- Don't worry, Bats, I always do my job perfectly," I told him, jumping out the open window.
I used the gusts of wind to get to the roof of the hospital, and from there I climbed to a higher building, until I was on the tallest of the nearby buildings. With less than twenty seconds left on the timer, I still had time.
I jumped up sharply, pushing off with the wind, and then gaining even more height with the wind. I wouldn't get too high, but it would be enough.
I swing sharply and throw the bombs upwards with all my might, after which I release a strong wave of air with one hand and a huge fireball with the other.
After a couple of moments, it all collides with the bombs and there is a very loud explosion. I covered my body with a small barrier of air, partially protecting myself from the shock and sound wave. However, I didn't just fly down, but instead, I already released large jets of fire from my two hands, which should have finally destroyed any remnants from the bombs that might have harmed someone.
And now we can head back. I can already see the police cars outside the hospital, so they are already waiting for me there. I hope that's it for today, because I don't really feel like spending the rest of the night suppressing small bandits in all parts of the city.
