Chapter 65 Battle in Charizard Valley
"Whew. Without a Pokémon capable of continuous, high-powered burst attacks, it's truly difficult to defeat such a tanky Pokémon," Ron sighed, as he changed Chansey's ability to Healer.
Wild Chansey were extremely rare. According to the Pokédex, capturing one would bring friendship and extraordinary luck. Inspired by this description, Ron impulsively did a ten-draw lottery, and… alright, the Pokédex had clearly lied to him.
Ron transferred the only decent Mankey he'd obtained back to his ranch. He felt a bit heartbroken about wasting his diamonds, considering he was still saving up for his second Aptitude Improvement Potion. At Ron's current earning speed, it'd likely take another two or three months.
After returning Chansey and Pheromosa, Ron noticed Cosmog was getting closer to evolving. It had become increasingly sleepy and had started to gain weight, often hiding in the backpack for an entire day.
Without Chansey slowing him down, his traveling speed significantly improved. After a day of walking, Ron reached a mountainous area. According to the map, it would take another full day to reach the Charizard Valley.
Ron hesitated briefly, then sent out Charizard. He jumped onto Charizard's back and said, "Charizard, let's fly straight there. We'll check out Charizard Valley. It's said to be home to many powerful wild Charizards."
"Roar!" Charizard cried out excitedly. Strong opponents fired it up!
With a powerful flap of its wings, Charizard turned into a streak of fiery-orange light and swiftly flew toward Charizard Valley.
"Charizard ahead, please stop!" After nearly two hours of flying, Ron heard a voice behind him.
Turning around, Ron saw a girl riding a Charizard with a bow on its head, dragging a balloon basket behind it. She shouted toward them using a megaphone.
Charizard immediately halted midair, watching curiously as the girl and her Charizard approached, uncertain who they were.
The girl caught up quickly and introduced herself, "Hello, I'm Liza, a Charizard trainer. This is my Charizard, Charla. Who might you be?"
"Hello. I'm Ron from Pallet Town, and this is my starter Pokémon, Charizard. We're here to challenge the Johto League. I heard there's a Charizard Valley here, so we decided to visit," Ron explained.
"So that's how it is! Let me guide you there. We warmly welcome trainers who have Charizards to visit. You can even leave your Charizard here to grow stronger," Liza said.
Ron silently nodded. The Pokémon League truly had a good plan—encouraging trainers to leave their Charizards here allowed strong Charizards to pair up and produce increasingly powerful offspring. Charizard Valley was undoubtedly one of the League's core Pokémon cultivation bases.
Liza's Charla led the way, and Ron and Charizard followed leisurely behind. Passing through a rock archway, Liza proudly declared, "Welcome to Charizard Valley!"
Flying through a passage lined with Charizard statues, they arrived at a valley surrounded by water. Ron noted that without large flying or water-type Pokémon, it would indeed be hard to reach this place, a clever measure against poachers.
Landing at the entrance, Liza jumped off Charla and turned toward Ron and Charizard, saying, "Pretty impressive! Some trainers can't even make the flight here. Let's head inside."
She pressed a button, and a large steel gate slowly opened, revealing numerous Charizards of various sizes and shapes, eating, resting, or sparring amongst themselves.
Ron nodded in appreciation. At first glance, every Charizard here was high-quality, with more than ten considered top-tier. Just looking at their potential made it clear how promising Charizard Valley was.
"Go ahead, Charizard. Let's see how far you've come," Ron encouraged.
Charizard nodded and stepped into the valley, roaring loudly a few times, "Roar! Roar roar! (Who dares battle me?)"
Several Charizards turned their heads, and one similarly sized Charizard approached Ron's. Ron checked—it was a top-quality one.
Both Charizards charged forward without spewing fire, locking claws and testing each other's strength. After grappling for about a minute, the opposing Charizard began to weaken. Ron's Charizard swiftly released its grip, turned around, and knocked its opponent away with a fierce tail whip.
"Roar!" Another Charizard suddenly jumped from a cliff, aiming a Fire Punch at Ron's Charizard.
Without dodging, Ron's Charizard ignited a Fire Claw, spread its wings, and met the incoming attacker head-on. The Fire Punch hit Charizard square in the chest, but Charizard didn't retreat even an inch. With swift, consecutive claw strikes, it decisively defeated the second opponent.
"You've trained your Charizard remarkably well. Looks like the top three Charizards of the Valley will have to test you," Liza said, then whistled sharply.
From the deeper parts of the valley, three battle-scarred Charizards of varying sizes flew over. Despite their different appearances, their numerous scars displayed their undeniable strength.
Ron's eyes narrowed slightly as he murmured, "Three level-100 Charizards, huh?"
Ron's Charizard sensed the danger as well. Even with the eight-times experience cheat active, his Charizard had only reached level 93. Each level required immense experience, and reaching level 100 would probably still take a year of effort.
Facing three level-100 Charizards, Ron no longer hid his trump card, declaring, "Charizard, Mega Evolve!"
A unique stream of energy linked Ron and Charizard, enveloping Charizard in a cocoon of light. Once the cocoon shattered, Mega Charizard X appeared on the battlefield.
"Go, Charizard," Ron calmly said.
Liza stared at Mega Charizard X, suddenly realizing something. "Now I remember! You're Ron from Pallet Town, the champion of the Indigo Plateau Conference. You're also the one who introduced Bond Evolution and Mega Evolution. Can Charizard Mega Evolve as well?"
"Of course," Ron nodded, showing the Key Stone bracelet on his wrist. "But you still need the corresponding Mega Stone."
After Mega Evolution, Mega Charizard X's strength surged dramatically. Without hesitation, it beckoned challengingly at the three Charizards, clearly implying: Which of you is coming first?
One Charizard immediately stepped forward, attacking with Dragon Claw. Mega Charizard X fearlessly formed its own draconic claws, swiftly charging forward to meet it head-on.
In just one clash, that Charizard was blasted away, losing its chance to continue.
Mega Charizard X landed gracefully, turning toward the two remaining Charizards and gesturing provocatively, as if asking: Who's next?
Despite the seven-level gap, Ron's cheat easily compensated for the difference in strength. Combined with Mega Evolution, his Charizard wasn't at all disadvantaged in terms of attributes against these Charizards.
With a powerful roar, the calmest-looking of the three stepped forward confidently, adopting a fighting stance and signaling Mega Charizard X to begin.
