Chapter 90 Burned Tower and Bell Tower, Battle with Morty
A few days later, Ron, Ruby, and Rosa finally arrived by plane in Ecruteak City, an ancient and culturally rich city.
Ruby pointed at the tall Bell Tower and said, "The Ecruteak Gym is next to the Bell Tower. Do you want to go there first?"
"No, let's go to the Burned Tower first. I'm a little curious about the place where the Legendary Beasts were revived," Ron replied.
"It's been so long. Do you think you'll find anything there?" Rosa asked curiously.
"Either way, let's check it out first. Even if we find nothing, we can treat it like a sightseeing tour," Ron said, then headed northwest. Ruby and Rosa quickly followed; visiting such a legendary place would be worthwhile anyway.
"The Burned Tower is located in the northwest of Ecruteak City. It was originally called the Brass Tower, paired with the Bell Tower. But it was burned down in a fire 150 years ago, and now only the ground floor and basement remain," Ruby explained to Ron and Rosa while walking. As someone born in the Johto Region, Ruby was quite familiar with local history.
"According to legends, Lugia once lived here. But when the Brass Tower collapsed, Lugia flew away and disappeared. During the fire, three unknown Pokémon died, and it was Ho-Oh who revived them," Ruby continued.
"But people at that time didn't understand. They thought Ho-Oh was a monster with the power to surpass life and death. They attacked and tried to drive Ho-Oh away, hurting Ho-Oh deeply. So, Ho-Oh also flew away. It's said that Ho-Oh would only return when humans learn to live in harmony, and the Legendary Beasts serve as its messengers to observe the world," Ruby said.
The trio arrived at the Burned Tower. Upon entering the ruined tower, Ron immediately felt several gazes directed at them. Ron remembered this place was a Ghost-type Pokémon nest, so he quickly said, "Sorry to disturb you. We're just looking around and will leave shortly."
"Ron, who are you talking to?" Rosa asked, puzzled by Ron's sudden remark.
"This place is inhabited by Ghost-type Pokémon. We've disturbed them by coming here, and they showed some hostility earlier. That's why I explained it to them. It's not a big deal, but it's best to avoid unnecessary trouble," Ron explained.
The cold gazes around them vanished. Ron asked the system to scan the Burned Tower, but apparently, nothing significant remained.
Ron shook his head and said, "Let's go. There's nothing left here."
He then led the way out of the Burned Tower. Ruby and Rosa exchanged a glance and quickly followed.
Soon, Ron's group arrived at the Ecruteak Gym. Upon entering, they saw Morty giving a lesson about Ghost-type Pokémon to a group of children. Ron spoke up, "Sorry to interrupt. I'm Ron from Pallet Town, and I've come to challenge the Ecruteak Gym."
Morty signaled them to wait a moment and continued explaining to the kids about the strengths of Ghost-type Pokémon. After finishing, Morty turned to Ron and said, "Hello. You're Ron, right? Do you mind if these children watch our battle?"
"No problem, let's get started," Ron said.
Morty nodded to the referee waiting at the side. The referee immediately announced, "Now begins the battle between Ron from Pallet Town and Morty, the Gym Leader of Ecruteak City. Both trainers will use three Pokémon. The battle ends when all Pokémon from one side lose their ability to fight. Only the challenger may switch Pokémon during the battle. Begin!"
"Then my first Pokémon is Gastly!" Morty sent out his Gastly.
"I'm counting on you, Chansey!" Ron sent out Chansey and ordered, "Chansey, Hail."
Chansey immediately launched an energy ball into the air, causing dark clouds to gather inside the gym, and snowflakes began falling.
Morty frowned, "Using this move indoors isn't polite. Gastly, use Hypnosis!"
"No choice. My Chansey doesn't know Foresight, but in snowy weather, your Gastly's invisibility won't work effectively. Chansey, close your eyes and use Blizzard!" Ron said.
Gastly's Hypnosis hit Chansey, but with its eyes closed, the move had no effect. Chansey opened its mouth and unleashed a powerful Blizzard at Gastly, who couldn't defend itself. Gastly froze solid and lost its ability to battle.
"Return, Gastly. Your turn, Haunter!" Morty immediately sent out his Haunter. Seeing Chansey recovering health with Soft-Boiled, Morty quickly shouted, "Haunter, Curse and then Pain Split!"
Haunter was extremely fast, instantly using Curse. A dark shadow wrapped around Chansey, causing her visible pain. In that brief, unresponsive moment, Haunter followed up with Pain Split. With Chansey's huge HP, Haunter quickly recovered to full health, while Chansey lost nearly half her HP.
Ron frowned, "Use Blizzard again!"
Ron had his own Gengar, so he knew exactly how annoying Ghost-types could be. While Curse could be removed by switching Pokémon, Ron was certain Haunter would immediately use Mean Look to prevent Chansey from leaving.
Chansey breathed out freezing air, releasing another powerful Blizzard at Haunter. Haunter didn't dodge, deliberately taking the Blizzard attack. Immediately afterward, Haunter used Pain Split again, and the Curse drained the last of Chansey's HP, knocking her out.
Ron slapped his forehead, "I got careless. I have my own Gengar and still forgot about that. Return, Chansey! Go, Tyranitar!"
As soon as Tyranitar appeared, it summoned a fierce Sandstorm, instantly replacing the hail. Tyranitar roared like a sandstorm tyrant, terrifying many of the watching children.
"Tyranitar, Dark Pulse!" Ron commanded.
"Haunter, Destiny Bond!" Seeing the incoming Dark Pulse, Morty shouted immediately.
"Naive. Protect," Ron calmly replied.
Tyranitar's Dark Pulse hit Haunter directly, and its subsequent Destiny Bond was blocked by Protect, instantly defeating Haunter.
"Return, Haunter. It's up to you now, Gengar!" Morty called out. "Use Hypnosis at close range!"
Gengar flashed forward, instantly appearing before Tyranitar, its eyes glowing with strange light, casting Hypnosis.
"Close your eyes, catch Gengar with Shadow Claw, then use Crunch!" Ron shouted.
Tyranitar closed its eyes to avoid Hypnosis. Shadow Claws formed on its hands. Morty immediately ordered Gengar to retreat, but he probably didn't know Ron possessed bond powers. Although the bond powers weren't especially strong with Tyranitar, simple telepathic communication was still possible.
Combined with Ron's visual assistance, Tyranitar charged forward, catching Gengar's hand, then fiercely biting down on it, inflicting massive damage and knocking Gengar out instantly!
"I've lost." Morty sighed helplessly, "Ghost-type Pokémon are tricky, but their low HP and defense remain major weaknesses."
Even after losing, Morty continued teaching the children. Judging from that, he truly was a dedicated teacher.
Ron received the badge from Morty, held it up proudly, and smiled triumphantly at Ruby and Rosa, "I've got the Fog Badge!"
