Chapter 7

Oliver fidgeted like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

I crossed my arms. "Well?"

He swallowed. "Uh… okay, so… I've kind of… maybe… liked you for a long time."

Silence.

Lena gasped dramatically. "Oh my god, he admits it!"

Daniel just rolled his eyes. "Yeah, we got that part, genius. The real question is how long you've been into her."

Oliver turned red. "Since… um… the third grade?"

I blinked. "The third grade?"

He nodded quickly. "You—you were the only kid who talked to me. You let me sit with you at lunch, even though I was weird and quiet, and you—uh—you gave me your pudding cup once."

Lena clutched her chest. "Not the pudding cup. That's true love right there."

I ignored her. "And you never said anything?"

"I tried!" he insisted. "But then my family moved away for a few years, and when I came back, you… you didn't remember me."

My stomach twisted with guilt. Oof. That's rough.

Oliver sighed. "So I just… admired you from afar. And it got worse in high school because you got even cooler, and I got even less cool, and I figured you'd never talk to me again."

Lena smirked. "So instead of talking to her like a normal person, you became a mysterious background character in her life?"

Oliver groaned. "I know how bad it sounds!"

Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose. "You are so lucky you're not an actual creep, dude."

I exhaled, my brain still catching up. This was a lot to process. I had a stalker-admirer from childhood, and he turned out to be… Oliver? The awkward guy with zero social skills?

It was almost funny.

No—it was funny.

I snorted. Then I started laughing.

Oliver looked panicked. "Wait—why are you laughing?"

"I just—I just—" I could barely breathe. "This is the dumbest, most ridiculous, most romantic comedy thing that has ever happened to me."

Lena grinned. "So… does that mean you forgive him?"

I studied Oliver. He looked completely mortified. But under all the awkwardness, he was genuine.

I sighed, shaking my head with a smile. "You're an idiot."

He perked up. "A… forgivable idiot?"

I rolled my eyes. "Don't push your luck."

Lena clapped her hands. "This is amazing. It's like watching a romance anime in real life."

Daniel groaned. "I'm leaving."

Lena wiggled her eyebrows at me. "Soooo, what now?"

I exhaled. "Now? Now we go home. And I think Oliver and I have a lot to talk about."

Oliver's eyes lit up. "Wait… does that mean I can talk to you now without you thinking I'm a serial killer?"

I smirked. "We'll see."

His smile was blinding. And for the first time… I kind of saw why he was cute.
