Chapter 27: Almost the End of School

The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the school grounds. The end of the school year was near, and the air buzzed with a mix of excitement and restlessness. Sora Nagi sat by the window, his eyes drifting to the fading light outside. His notebook lay open on his desk, pages filled with half-written notes and absentminded sketches.

Around him, classmates chatted about summer plans, exams, and the freedom waiting just beyond the last bell. Sora's world, once small and quiet, had grown. He no longer sat alone; instead, he found himself surrounded by the warmth of friendship.

"Hey, Sora!"

He looked up to see Akio Sanagi sliding into the seat beside him. Her brown hair was slightly messy, and her black eyes shone with mischief. "Almost the end, huh? Got any big plans for the break?"

Sora shook his head, a shy smile touching his lips. "Not really. I haven't thought about it."

Akio leaned in, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, you better start thinking! Nanako and I are planning a little summer adventure. You're coming, right?"

Before Sora could respond, Nanako Shimuya approached. She held a stack of books, her expression soft and calm. "What are you two talking about?"

"Summer plans!" Akio grinned. "I was just telling Sora about our adventure."

Nanako set her books down and took a seat. "It would be nice if you joined us, Sora. We could visit the park again or maybe explore somewhere new."

Sora's fingers tightened around his pencil. The idea of stepping out into the world beyond school was both thrilling and terrifying. "I... I'd like that."

Akio clapped her hands. "It's settled then! We'll make this summer unforgettable."

The bell rang, signaling the start of the last class of the day. Students shuffled to their seats, and the teacher began a lesson on reviewing for final exams. But Sora's mind wandered, carried by the promise of new experiences.

As the afternoon wore on, the golden light softened, and the school seemed to breathe with the anticipation of an ending and a beginning.

When the final bell rang, Sora, Nanako, and Akio packed their bags. The hallway was filled with the sound of lockers closing and feet shuffling toward the exit.

"Walk home together?" Nanako asked, adjusting the strap of her bag.

"Of course!" Akio looped her arm through Nanako's, and they both looked at Sora expectantly.

He nodded, a warm feeling spreading in his chest.

The three of them moved through the bustling corridors, stepping into the fresh air outside. The world beyond the school gates seemed brighter, more open.

As they walked, Akio filled the silence with stories and jokes. Nanako added gentle laughter, and Sora found himself smiling more than he ever thought he could.

When they reached the familiar fork in the road, Akio stretched her arms above her head. "Alright, see you guys tomorrow! Just a few more days, and then—freedom!"

She waved and ran off, her energy never seeming to fade.

Nanako and Sora continued together, their pace slow and unhurried. The streets were bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun, and the sounds of distant cicadas added a lazy rhythm to their steps.

"Are you really okay with spending your summer with us?" Nanako asked gently.

Sora nodded. "Yeah. I want to. I want to try... living more."

Her expression brightened, and she took a step closer. "I'm really happy to hear that."

They reached Nanako's house, and she paused at the gate. "You'll be alright going home?"

"Yeah." Sora's voice was steady, more sure of himself than before.

"Okay. See you tomorrow."

"See you."

As Nanako disappeared through the gate, Sora stood for a moment, breathing in the cool evening air. His world, once so small, had opened up. And with Nanako and Akio by his side, he felt ready to step into whatever came next.

The summer ahead was still a mystery, but for the first time, Sora wasn't afraid. He was ready to face the light, to let it in, and to keep moving forward.
