The last week of school moved both too fast and too slow. Each day, Sora Nagi felt the weight of change pressing down on him. The classrooms, the hallways, and even the rusted lockers seemed to glow with a soft, nostalgic light. Everything felt important, like each moment was being stored away as a memory.
On Friday morning, Sora sat at his desk, staring at the chalkboard. The teacher's words drifted over him, but he could barely focus. His mind was filled with the summer ahead—spending time with Nanako Shimuya and Akio Sanagi, stepping out into the world beyond his usual path.
The final bell rang, sharp and clear. It echoed through the halls, marking the end of the school year. Students cheered, desks scraped, and bags were slung over shoulders with new energy. Sora stood up slowly, his movements careful, as if not wanting to break the moment.
"Hey, Sora!"
Akio's cheerful voice pulled him from his thoughts. She bounded over, her brown hair bouncing with each step. "Can you believe it? We're free!"
Nanako appeared behind her, a soft smile on her face. "It feels strange, doesn't it? Like everything is changing."
Sora nodded. "Yeah. But... it feels good."
They walked out of the classroom together, blending into the crowd of students. The halls were filled with farewells and promises to meet over the summer. The trio slipped through the school gates, stepping into the warm afternoon.
"What should we do first?" Akio asked, spinning around to face them. "I say we get ice cream. My treat!"
Nanako laughed, her voice light. "That sounds perfect."
Sora hesitated, then nodded. "I'd like that."
The three of them wandered through the streets, their steps unhurried. The small ice cream shop at the corner of town was buzzing with kids celebrating the start of summer. They ordered their cones—vanilla for Sora, strawberry for Nanako, and chocolate swirl for Akio.
They found a shady spot under a tree in the park. The same park where Sora had first truly connected with Nanako. The memory brought a soft warmth to his chest.
"So," Akio began between bites, "what's the first stop on our summer adventure? We could visit the beach, go hiking, or maybe just laze around and watch movies."
Nanako looked at Sora, her expression gentle. "What do you think, Sora?"
He licked his ice cream, the cool sweetness grounding him. "I... I'd like to try everything. As long as it's with you two."
Akio grinned, and Nanako's eyes shined with quiet joy.
As the sun began to set, they made their way home. The streets were quieter, the world slipping into a peaceful dusk. When they reached the familiar fork in the road, Akio waved and headed off, leaving Sora and Nanako alone.
They walked side by side, the silence comfortable.
"Are you excited?" Nanako asked softly.
Sora took a moment before answering. "Yeah. I'm nervous too. But... I'm not as scared as I used to be."
She nodded, her steps slowing as they reached her house. "You've come so far, Sora. I'm really proud of you."
Her words wrapped around him like a blanket. "Thank you, Nanako. For everything."
Her smile was soft, full of something warm and unspoken. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yeah."
She waved as she stepped through her gate. Sora stood there for a moment, letting the quiet fill him. Then, with a deep breath, he turned and walked home.
That night, as he lay in bed, Sora felt a new kind of peace. The darkness of his room no longer felt like a cage. His world, once so small and gray, was now full of color and light.
And as sleep claimed him, Sora dreamed not of shadows, but of sunlight, laughter, and the open road waiting for him and his friends.
