The Data Breakthrough
Kai hunched over a flickering console in their temporary hideout, fingers flying across the keyboard. Cipher lounged on a pile of old wiring, tossing a neon data chip in the air like it was a toy.
"You sure this drive isn't rigged to fry my brain?" Kai muttered.
Cipher smirked. "Seventy percent sure."
Nova rolled her eyes. "Great. So only a thirty percent chance of permanent brain damage."
Kai sighed. "Good enough." He ran the decryption protocol.
The screen flashed red.
WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.
Kai's heart kicked up. The drive wasn't just encrypted—it was booby-trapped.
Cipher's eyebrow arched. "Huh. That's some serious security."
Nova gripped her gun. "Can you crack it?"
Kai grinned. "Can I? Watch and learn."
With a few keystrokes, he rerouted power, isolating the encryption's self-destruct mechanism. It was like diffusing a bomb... except digital.
Cipher watched with genuine interest. "Okay, okay, you're actually good."
Kai smirked. "Told you—"
BZZZT.
The power cut out.
Cipher burst out laughing. "Nice. Super elite hacker and you forget to reroute backup power."
Kai groaned. "Shut up."
Nova crossed her arms. "Fix it. Fast."
Kai grumbled but rebooted the system. The data began unscrambling, and as the files decrypted, his smirk faded.
The first file revealed a name.
PROJECT SYNAPSE.
Kai exchanged a glance with Nova. That name... sounded familiar.
Then the second file decrypted.
SUBJECT: KAIUS STRYDER.
Kai's stomach dropped.
Cipher whistled. "Well, damn."

Hunted by Titan Industries
Before Kai could process the revelation, his cyberdeck flashed a new warning.
INCOMING HOSTILES.
Nova reacted first. "We've got company."
Cipher pulled up the security cams. "Ooooh, you're gonna love this. Titan hit squad. Looks like they're knocking."
Kai cursed. Titan Industries was already here?!
Nova checked her ammo. "We have to move. Now."
Cipher grinned. "Or... we have some fun."
Kai groaned. "Your definition of fun is concerning."
Cipher typed rapidly. "Relax, I'm just scrambling their targeting systems. Buy us a few minutes."
Nova cocked her gun. "Not enough. They'll still find us."
Kai's mind raced. They needed a distraction—something big.
Then an idea hit him.
He smirked at Cipher. "How do you feel about making things explode?"
Cipher's eyes lit up. "Finally! I was waiting for you to ask."

The Explosive Escape
Titan's cybernetic enforcers breached the door.
BOOM.
The entire warehouse shook as Cipher's virus triggered a gas line explosion, sending flames roaring through the corridors.
The Titan soldiers staggered back, momentarily blinded.
Kai, Nova, and Cipher bolted.
As they reached the exit, Cipher winked at Kai. "See? Told you this would be fun."
Kai gasped for breath. "Remind me never to let you near explosives again."
Nova just shook her head. "Let's go before they regroup."
Kai clenched his jaw. Titan Industries was after him. Hard.
But now? Now he had a lead.
Project Synapse.
Whatever it was, it held the key to his past, his missing family... and why everyone wanted him dead.
And he was done running.
