"Two Steps Ahead"
The underground tunnels beneath the city were cold, damp, and crawling with drones.
Kai had spent half his life dodging trouble.
Now, trouble was chasing him.
Titan Industries.
The Ashen Veil.
The Iron Fangs.
Every faction in the city wanted him dead—or worse, in their hands.
They weren't ready for what he had planned.
Kai crouched behind a rusted metal pillar, his cyberdeck flickering in his hands.
Seraph stood beside him, adjusting the hilt of her katana. "Remind me why we're breaking into an Ashen Veil safehouse?"
Zero peeked over the ledge, muttering. "Because Kai's a freaking lunatic."
Kai grinned. "Incorrect. I'm a genius lunatic."
Zero sighed. "That doesn't make it better!"
Seraph shook her head. "I still don't see the point."
Kai held up his cyberdeck. "Because these guys have the next piece of the puzzle."
On the screen, an encrypted file flickered.
A location.
A second destroyed lab.
And one name:
"The Prophet."
Seraph frowned. "ECHO's cult leader?"
Kai nodded. "And they're next on my list."
Zero muttered. "Oh great. More homicidal cyber-fanatics."
Kai grinned. "Relax. We just need to 'borrow' some intel from the Veil."
Zero sighed. "And how do you plan to do that?"
Kai's grin widened. "By convincing them to give it to us."

The Heist Begins
The Ashen Veil's safehouse was a fortified old subway station, tucked away beneath layers of hacked security.
Kai worked fast, bypassing the firewalls, his fingers dancing over the keys.
One misstep, and alarms would bring a dozen cyber-rebels down on them.
Seraph stood watch, blade ready.
Zero… was eating a protein bar.
Kai side-eyed her. "Really?"
She shrugged. "Stress eating."
Kai shook his head. "Alright, I'm in. Just need one more—"
"You're in the wrong place, jackass."
A gun cocked behind his head.
Kai froze.
Slowly, he turned.
A woman stood there, dressed in patched-together combat gear, a cybernetic eyepiece scanning him.
The Rebel Hacker.
Ashen Veil's best. A legend in the city's underworld.
She smirked. "Did you really think you could out-hack me in my own house?"
Kai grinned. "Honestly? Yeah."
Her smirk twitched.
Then, everything exploded.

Escape & Unexpected Alliance
The firefight was instant chaos.
Guns blazed. Drones swarmed.
Kai grabbed Zero and Seraph and bolted.
The Rebel Hacker pursued, launching a cyber-attack mid-sprint.
Kai's cyberdeck flickered—his HUD glitching.
She was already hacking him.
Kai gritted his teeth. "Oh, you wanna play dirty?"
He fired back—a counter-hack so fast her eyepiece shorted out.
She stumbled. Swore.
Kai lunged.
He tackled her through a neon-lit window.
Glass shattered.
They hit the ground hard, rolling.
When they stopped, she had a knife at his throat.
Kai panted. "So... do I get points for effort?"
She snorted. "You're insane."
Kai grinned. "You're not the first to say that."
She hesitated.
Then she pulled the knife back.
Kai raised an eyebrow. "So, truce?"
She smirked. "Temporary."
Kai extended his hand. "Deal."

Next Stop: ECHO's Domain
The team regrouped as sirens blared in the distance.
The Rebel Hacker leaned against a wall. "You still haven't told me why you're after ECHO."
Kai flipped open his cyberdeck.
The file flashed again.
A second lab.
And the words: "Cryotube Subjects: Status Unknown."
Kai's fist clenched.
His family was out there.
And ECHO had answers.
Kai exhaled. "Because I'm done running."
Zero nudged him. "Liar. You ran all night."
Kai smirked. "Yeah, well. I got tired of it."
Seraph chuckled. "Then let's pay them a visit."
Kai grinned. "Exactly."
