Chapter 14: The Intense Confrontation

After escaping the attack from the stalkers, Irene didn't back down. Instead, her determination to uncover the truth became even stronger. She knew that every step she took might be dangerous, but she had no way back.

The next day, Irene decided to go to the orphanage again to look for more clues. She knew that the orphanage was the key to the whole incident, and there must be some secrets hidden there that she hadn't discovered yet.

When she arrived at the orphanage, she found that the atmosphere here was extremely strange. The gate was closed tightly, and it was deathly silent all around, as if shrouded by an invisible shadow. Irene pushed the gate open cautiously and entered the yard. The yard was overgrown with weeds, and there was no one in sight. Only the old pagoda tree in the corner swayed gently in the breeze, making a rustling sound, as if telling an unknown story.

She entered the main building of the orphanage. There was a stale smell inside. She walked forward step by step along the corridor, and with each step, she could hear her footsteps echoing in the empty corridor. Suddenly, she heard a faint sound of footsteps coming from upstairs. She immediately stopped, clenched the gun in her hand vigilantly, and slowly walked towards the source of the sound.

When she reached the second floor, she saw a figure coming out of the room at the end of the corridor. The figure turned and ran as soon as it saw Irene. Irene didn't hesitate and chased after it. The two engaged in a fierce chase in the narrow corridor.

"Stop! Don't run!" Irene shouted loudly. But the figure didn't stop. Instead, it ran even faster. Irene quickened her pace, took a big step forward, and tackled the figure to the ground.

The two wrestled on the ground. Only then did Irene realize that the other person was a tall man. He was very strong and tried to break free from Irene's control. Thanks to her years of combat training, Irene firmly suppressed him and finally subdued him.

"Who are you? Why did you run?" Irene asked, panting. The man lowered his head and remained silent. Irene took off his hat and was surprised to find that he was a staff member of the orphanage.

"Speak! What's going on?" Irene asked sternly. The staff member hesitated for a moment and finally said, "I... I'm just scared. I don't want to be involved in this matter."

Under Irene's questioning, the staff member finally revealed some of the truth. It turned out that some dark things had happened in the orphanage, and these things were related to some of the town's powerful people. He was afraid of being implicated, so he had been hiding these things.

After hearing this, the anger and shock in Irene's heart reached their peak. She knew that she was one step closer to the truth, but the road ahead was even more dangerous.
