Chapter 13: The Approaching Danger

As the investigation deepened, Irene found herself in a dangerous situation. She started to receive frequent anonymous calls and text messages, all warning her to stop the investigation, or else she would be in mortal danger.

"You'd better stop, or you'll end up like those people!" "Don't meddle in this matter anymore. You won't get away with it!" These threatening words, like cold bullets, hit Irene's heart again and again. But she wasn't intimidated. Instead, her determination became even firmer.

One night, on her way home, Irene suddenly felt that someone was following her. She quickened her pace, and the footsteps behind her also sped up. Her heart was in her throat, and her hand instinctively reached for the gun at her waist. The streetlights on both sides of the street emitted a dim yellow light, stretching her shadow very long.

She deliberately turned into a narrow alley, trying to shake off the stalker. But as soon as she entered the alley, a black sedan suddenly stopped at the entrance of the alley. Several masked men got out of the car and surrounded her. Irene quickly drew her pistol and shouted, "Stop! One more step closer and I'll shoot!"

Those men weren't intimidated by her threat. They slowly approached, the weapons in their hands glinting coldly in the dark. Irene's heart was pounding. She knew she was in danger. But she didn't back down. She calmly observed the surrounding environment, looking for a chance to escape.

"Who are you? Why are you following me?" Irene shouted. No one answered her question. The men just kept approaching. Just as the two sides were at a stalemate, Irene suddenly heard the sound of police sirens in the distance. When those men heard the sirens, their faces changed. They quickly retreated to the car and drove away.

Irene let out a sigh of relief. She knew this was just the beginning. Her investigation had touched the interests of some people, and they wouldn't let her go easily. But she wouldn't give up either. She would seek justice for those victims, even if it cost her everything.
