Rina sighed, setting her phone down on the table. "Anyway, enough about Mr. Mysterious Hero. How about you? How's the fam, Briggs?"
Briggs leaned back, sipping his coffee. "Ah, you mean the little legion of gremlins I call my children? They're good. Max lost his first tooth kid was so psyched until he discovered the Tooth Fairy isn't as lucrative as he'd hoped."
Rina snorted. "What did you offer him? A promotion? Medal of Honor?"
Briggs laughed. "Five dollars. He was wanting twenty. I told him he's not negotiating a hostage crisis."
She laughed, rolling her head. "Good boy. Wait a couple of years, and he'll have a black market running out of your living room."
Briggs sighed dramatically. "I'm scared."
There was a moment's silence just comfortable silence between them.
Then Briggs looked at her. "How about you, Rina? You ever think about y'know, family, children?"
She hesitated, studying her coffee. "Me? Nah." Her lips twisted in a wry little smile. "Can't imagine trying to make a mini-me. The world isn't ready."
Briggs chuckled. "Fair. But still… you ever ask yourself what happens next? After all of this?"
Rina tapped her fingers against her cup, eyes distant for a moment. Then she shrugged. "Not really. This is it for now. This job. This city. It's enough."
But inwardly, she was not so sure.
