The Storm Reaper shook as enemy fire streaked past, the night sky illuminated by bursts of crimson energy. The Crimson Hand had found them—again.
"I swear," Lucien growled, gripping the wheel as he veered the ship into a sharp dive, "these bastards must have a sixth sense for when we're about to relax."*
"Or maybe it's because you stole the most dangerous artifact in existence," Marion quipped, already loading her twin pistols.
"Details," Lucien shot back. "Evelyn! Can we use that thing against them?"
Evelyn was still gripping the pulsating artifact, eyes locked on the glowing symbols swirling across its surface. "I don't know what it wants yet, but—" She winced as another pulse of energy coursed through her. "I think I can try something."*
"Define 'try'!" Rosie yelled, blasting a pair of grappling hooks off the side of the ship to keep boarders at bay.
"Less talking, more shooting!" Selene snapped, vanishing into the shadows just as an enemy airship fired its harpoons.
The Storm Reaper jerked sideways as mechanical claws latched onto its hull. Enemy soldiers in crimson coats began leaping across the gap, their rifles and steam-powered blades at the ready.
"Oh, wonderful," Victoria sighed, her metal fingers clicking as she retracted a blade from her wrist. "More guests."*
Valeria cackled as she lobbed a glass vial into the fray. "Surprise! This one might explode!"*
Lucien had no time to question it—he lunged, grabbing a soldier mid-air and flipping him over the railing. "Rosie, keep them off the engines! Marion, get to the lower deck!"*
"And what are you doing?" Marion called back.
"Improvising!"* Lucien spun, grabbed Evelyn's arm, and pulled her behind cover. "Alright, genius, whatever crazy idea you're about to have, now's the time!"*
"I think—" Evelyn took a deep breath, "if I synchronize the artifact's frequency with the ship's core, I can emit an energy pulse to—"
Lucien stared blankly. "English, please."*
"Big boom. Knocks them away. Hopefully doesn't kill us."*
"Ah, see? That I understand."* He grinned. "Do it."*
Evelyn hesitated for half a second before nodding. She pressed her hands against the artifact, closing her eyes as the symbols on its surface shifted and rearranged.
The air around them hummed.
And then—
A pulse of white-blue energy erupted from the artifact, surging through the Storm Reaper like a heartbeat. The ship's lanterns flared bright. The sky itself seemed to crackle.
The energy wave shot outward—every Crimson Hand soldier on the ship was sent flying back, their weapons short-circuiting. Even the enemy airships shuddered, their engines sputtering in protest.
Lucien grabbed Evelyn as she wobbled, eyes wide. "That—" He let out a breathless chuckle. "That was incredible."*
Evelyn blinked up at him, a small, almost dazed smile forming. "I—"
"CAPTAIN!" Rosie interrupted, kicking a groaning enemy off the deck. "Less flirting, more flying!"*
Lucien groaned, dragging a hand down his face. "Can't even have a moment—"
"LUCIEN!"
He looked up just in time to see the lead enemy ship ramming toward them.
"Oh, come on—*"
