The Storm Reaper rocked violently as the enemy airship bore down on them, its reinforced prow tearing through the storm-tossed sky. The Crimson Hand wasn't just retreating—they were sending in their flagship.
"That's the Blood Omen!" Rosie yelled, gripping the rigging. "That ship's twice our size and loaded with artillery!"*
"Wonderful," Lucien muttered. "Everyone, brace—"
A blast of crimson energy streaked from the Blood Omen's cannons. The Storm Reaper lurched sideways as the force of the explosion sheared off a section of the starboard railing.
"Valeria, tell me you have a potion that can make our ship not explode!"*
"In theory!" Valeria called back, rummaging through her satchel. "Do we prefer 'volatile' or 'catastrophic' results?"
"Lucien!" Evelyn cut in, her fingers still clutching the pulsating artifact. "I can use the artifact again, but I don't know how much more it can handle!"*
"If it fries the engines, we're dead in the air!" Marion warned.
"And if we do nothing, we're dead anyway!" Lucien shot back.
Victoria, who had been calmly sharpening her wrist-blade amid the chaos, finally spoke. "I suggest we act soon. That ship's harpoons are primed."*
"Oh for—" Lucien took a deep breath, gripping the wheel. "Fine. Evelyn, do it. Rosie, get the cannons ready. Marion, get below deck and patch any leaks. Selene—" He turned to where the assassin had been—only to find she had vanished.
"Where did—"
A gunshot rang from the enemy ship, followed by the Blood Omen's main mast snapping in two.
Lucien grinned. "Ah. There she is."*
"Less admiring, more surviving!" Evelyn snapped, pressing her hand against the artifact.
The humming started again—stronger this time. The symbols on its surface shifted, glowing brighter. Another pulse of energy radiated outward.
This time, the Storm Reaper didn't just repel the enemy—it shot forward, propelled by the artifact's power.
"Hold on!" Lucien yelled. The ship surged through the sky, the enemy fleet left reeling in their wake.
"It's working!" Evelyn gasped, barely staying upright.
"FOR NOW!" Rosie shouted. "But we still have a giant murderous airship chasing us!"*
Lucien gritted his teeth. "Then let's make sure they regret it."*
