The harpoon struck with a deafening crunch, embedding itself deep in the Storm Reaper's engine. Sparks erupted, steam hissed, and the entire ship lurched violently.
"Well, that's not ideal," Lucien muttered, gripping the wheel as the ship veered sharply.
"We're losing altitude!" Evelyn shouted, already rushing toward the damaged engine. "If that harpoon pierces the etheric core, we'll be reduced to cinders!"*
"No pressure then!" Lucien yelled back.
"Oh, there's plenty of pressure!" Valeria cackled. "We might actually explode this time!"*
"You say that every time," Rosie snapped, wrestling with the cannon's controls. "And yet, we're still here!"*
"Statistics dictate that luck eventually runs out," Selene deadpanned. "Perhaps today's the day."*
"Not on my watch!" Marion declared.
The Counterattack
"Rosie!" Lucien barked. "Can you blast that harpoon free?"
"On it!"*
Rosie swiveled the main cannon, aiming for the chain attached to the harpoon. "Hold tight, ladies and gents!" She fired.
The explosion sent shockwaves through the air, snapping the harpoon's chain. The Storm Reaper wobbled but remained airborne.
"We're free!"* Rosie whooped. "Somebody thank me later—with whiskey."*
"I'll consider it," Lucien quipped. "Now let's—"
But before he could finish, the artifact screamed.
A deep, otherworldly wail tore through the ship, a sound that bypassed ears and clawed straight into their souls.
Victoria's mechanical body jerked, her glowing eyes flickering. "Energy output rising—Warning: Reality instability detected."
"Translation?" Lucien asked, bracing himself.
"Something very, very bad is about to happen," Evelyn said grimly.
A Tear in the Sky
The artifact's glow turned crimson. The air above them rippled, as if reality itself were being peeled open.
Through the rift, something stirred.
"Oh, hell," Marion whispered. "That's not normal."*
Lucien tightened his grip on his pistol. "Nope. But I'd be bored if it was."
The bounty hunters had stopped attacking. Even they were staring at the growing anomaly with a mix of awe and terror.
Selene's voice was unusually low. "Lucien… we need to leave. Now."
"Agreed," Victoria said. "Dimensional instability is unpredictable. Prolonged exposure may result in—"
Before she could finish, the sky itself cracked open—and something stepped through.
