Chapter 44: The Price of Infamy

The Storm Reaper shuddered as the bounty hunters' airships moved into formation, sleek and deadly against the crimson-streaked sky. Their flagship, The Iron Fangs, loomed ahead, bristling with cannons.

Lucien tilted his head, sizing up the enemy. "You know, for people who claim to be professionals, they sure are broadcasting their intentions loudly."*

"Maybe they're just really confident," Marion mused, peering through a spyglass. "Or really stupid."*

"Most bounty hunters are a mix of both," Selene muttered. "But these ones…" She hesitated. "They're different. They move like mercenaries, not scavengers."*

"Great," Lucien muttered. "Professional killers instead of amateurs. Exactly what we needed today."*

"Can we not be sarcastic when we're seconds from being shot down?" Evelyn snapped, adjusting the ship's energy core. "I'd rather not die due to your misplaced sense of humor."*

"What, and let them win?" Lucien grinned. "No chance."*

A second later, the bounty hunters opened fire.

An Explosive Welcome

Cannon blasts rocked the ship, sending crates and tools flying across the deck. Lucien pulled the wheel hard, narrowly dodging a barrage that would've torn through their hull.

"Evasive maneuvers!" he barked. "Rosie, take the guns! Evelyn, keep us in the air! Valeria—" He paused. "Actually, do not touch anything explosive!"*

"Aww," Valeria pouted. "But I had plans..."

"No."*

Rosie was already at the cannons, grinning like a lunatic. "I love a good sky fight!"*

She fired a volley, tearing through one of the smaller ships flanking them.

"One down!"* she cheered.

"A dozen more to go," Selene muttered. "Don't celebrate yet."*

As the battle raged on, Marion slipped up beside Lucien. "What's the plan, Captain?"

"Survive," Lucien said. "And maybe steal something while we're at it."*

Marion chuckled. "Now that's the Lucien I know."*

The Artifact's Power Awakens

As if things weren't complicated enough, the artifact in Lucien's satchel hummed.

A deep, resonant vibration pulsed through the ship, sending a chill down everyone's spine.

"Okay…" Rosie muttered. "That's new."*

Victoria, standing near the artifact, flinched. "Warning: Unknown energy spike detected. Potential reality distortion imminent."*

"Oh, lovely," Lucien groaned. "Now we have magic nonsense on top of everything else."*

"It's not magic," Evelyn corrected. "It's unstable etheric energy with an undetermined source—"

"Same thing," Lucien cut in. "Either way, we're in trouble."*

The artifact's glow intensified—right as The Iron Fangs unleashed their secret weapon: A massive, harpoon-like spear shot straight for the Storm Reaper's engines.

Lucien had just enough time to yell, "HOLD ON!" before impact.
