Chapter 5

"Sarah... Brother, I'm in so much pain, Sarah's stomach hurts so badly..."

"Vivienne, if anything happens to Sarah, you'll pay dearly for it!"

"Sarah is already suffering so much, yet she's still thinking of you at every turn. I can't believe you've become so petty!"

Kellan practically sprinted to Sarah's side, scooping her up in his arms and heading for the stairs.

He acted as if I didn't exist, a powerful force shoving me aside.

It was Kellan's elbow.

"You're in the way, are you that jealous of Sarah? Just because of a few flowers, you'd actually harm her!"

After tumbling several times, I finally came to a stop at the bend in the staircase, my abdomen, not yet recovered, throbbing with intense pain.

I curled up in the corner of the landing.

Large beads of sweat trickled down from the corners of my eyes. My survival instinct overpowered my pride, and in this critical moment, I used my last ounce of strength to grab onto Kellan's pant leg as he descended the stairs.

"Kellan... I'm... in pain..."

I gasped for air, lacking even the strength to lift my head as a suffocating feeling enveloped me.

Like a fish reeled onto shore, yet forced to beg for help from the very angler who caught it."Vivienne, why are you being so petty? If Sarah cares for you, she cares. Do you really have to be jealous?"

"Have some shame! You're about to be a mother, show some self-respect! Stop embarrassing yourself everywhere!"

Kellan kicked my hand away, his polished leather shoes unhesitatingly stomping on my hand.

The pain shot through the back of my hand, and for a moment, I couldn't tell which hurt more.

...

When I opened my eyes again, I was in the hospital.

I had a very long dream.

In the dream, Kellan and I had just met.

Right after graduating from college, I recklessly wanted to marry him.

Everyone around me tried to persuade me otherwise, saying he was just a poor boy. In this day and age, they said, there's no such thing as true love. Don't ruin your life because of an immature idea.

I was young and rebellious, and I wouldn't listen.

The more they tried to stop me, the more determined I was to marry him.

When Kellan didn't have a penny to his name, I resolutely married him.

In our moments of passionate intimacy, he kissed the corner of my mouth and said, "Honey, I'll do everything in my power to give you the happiest life."

He really did fulfill that promise.

After our marriage, his career took off, advancing rapidly. In six years, we moved houses three times, each one bigger than the last.He lived up to his words, giving me the best of everything. He'd bring me a baked sweet potato when he got off work, and even when he went out for business dinners, he never forgot to bring home some food for me.

I always thought we would stay this happy forever.

When exactly did the person lying next to me change?

"Vivienne! You've got some nerve showing up at the hospital?"

Kellan strode into the hospital room. Just waking from a dream, I gradually saw the person before me merge with the one in my dream.

Nothing had changed, yet everything had changed.

"Still playing dumb? That trick doesn't work on me anymore. If you're not hurt, then get the hell out of the hospital. Don't embarrass me here!"

Kellan yanked me off the hospital bed, ignoring the IV needle still in my hand.

Blood trickled from the back of my hand, and the tearing pain below was still coming in waves. I couldn't feel the pain, I just felt so, so tired.

"Kellan, let's get a divorce."
