Sophia could still feel the weight of Alexander Kingston's gaze on her as she stepped out of his office. Her heart was pounding—not just from nerves but from the undeniable intensity of the man she had just faced.
What was that? she thought, pressing the elevator button. She had been prepared for a tough interview, but she hadn't expected him to take such a personal interest in her responses. His presence alone had been enough to shake her composure, but the way he had studied her, almost as if she were a puzzle he was trying to solve, left her unsettled.
The assistant who had escorted her in earlier appeared beside her. "Miss Evans, Mr. Kingston has requested you return to his office."
Sophia blinked. "Now?"
"Now."
A wave of confusion rolled over her, but she squared her shoulders and turned back. Did I say something wrong?
When she re-entered the office, Alexander was seated behind his massive desk, fingers steepled, his expression unreadable. He gestured for her to sit.
"I don't normally do this," he said without preamble, "but I'm offering you the position. Effective immediately."
Sophia's eyes widened. "Just like that?"
His lips quirked slightly. "You said you were the best. Let's see if you were telling the truth."
A thrill of excitement shot through her, but she kept her face composed. "I won't let you down."
"See that you don't." His voice was firm, but something in his tone made her shiver. "You'll be working closely with me. My schedule is demanding, and I don't tolerate incompetence."
Sophia nodded. "Understood."
"Good. Be here at seven sharp tomorrow morning." He stood, effectively dismissing her.
She hesitated for a brief moment before turning to leave. But as she reached the door, his voice stopped her.
"Sophia."
Her breath caught as she turned back.
His eyes held hers, their depths unreadable. "This job will test you. Are you ready for that?"
Something in his words felt like more than just a professional warning.
Sophia met his gaze without flinching. "I don't break easily, Mr. Kingston."
His lips curved slightly, as if she had just passed another unspoken test.
"Good," he murmured. "Then we'll see how long you last."
As she left his office for the second time that day, Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that she had just stepped into something far bigger than she had anticipated.
And she wasn't sure she would ever be the same again.
